Who's Got Next ? Replacing Boise May Be Tough

The challenge, UH athletic director Jim Donovan said, "is to think strategically instead of tactically. We have to consider where we want the WAC to be in five or 10 years. We have to think, 'Does what we do bring us value?' "

The most likely possibility, people in the industry say, is North Texas, currently a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Mean Green turned down overtures from the WAC six years ago to remain in the Sun Belt, but indications are they want to make a move. Conference USA, which passed UNT over for Texas-El Paso in 2004, apparently is the Mean Green's first choice.

UNT has undertaken an ambitious facility improvement project and expects to open a $78 million, 30,000-seat football stadium in 2011.

For the WAC, UNT is attractive as an entry back into the lucrative Texas recruiting picture and as a travel partner for Louisiana Tech on the far-flung eastern wing of the nation's most widespread conference.

Where is everyone getting the idea we want to join the WAC? I know we've not hid the fact we'd scream like a little bunch of girls if we got asked out by CUSA, but where are people seeing we want to look west for the foreseeable future?

Us going to a Boise-less WAC is like going to a bar and seeing a hot girl standing with a whole gaggle of anchors...then approaching after the hot girl has gone home to her boyfriend. Sure, in a drunken stupor some sex is preferable to no sex but what about the next morning?

I think your point would be: Whack....but not WAC.

How about a sex buddy?

Jim Donovan is a fan of North Texas; I believe once was pushed for our AD before RV was hired.

Anyway, the WAC will probably go after Montana for 2012 entry (FCS moritorium is up in 2011). They do fill their stadium...

The Grizzlies certainly are a better fit for the Wac than we are. One thing still not certain is if Montana WANTS to play FBS ball. They are doing well in FCS ball and challenge for a national championship every year. They would not do that at the FBS level. I would never want to go back to FCS, but I don't live in Big Sky country.

As Western Kentucky can attest, it can be a big and painful jump. Being king of the hill in FCS world feels pretty good and can sometimes cloud your judgement. Nothing that a few years in FBS land won't cure you of however.
