I believe the WAC had 2 #12 seeds (USU and NMSU), neither advanced past the first round.

And when has the Belt ever had two 12 seeds? The WAC also had over 20 games televised on the ESPN network last season.

ESPN needs games that for their late time slot. You really want to play games a lot of games that START at 9pm CT? If you think attendance is bad now, play a lot of very late starting games!

And 5 of those were on ESPN Regional TV, not the national network.

I FIND YOUR #5 PARTICULARLY INTERESTING--IF THE F?U SCHOOLS ARE SO UNRECOGNIZABLE WHY HAS FAU KICKED OUR REAR EVERY YEAR SINCE THEY HAVE HAD A FOOTBALL TEAM? SINCE 2002.

Being unrecognizable to the casual fan and being good are two different things.

It could be a plus. Less competition in that timeslot. I mean really if you compare our current zero TV coverage to late Saturday night ESPN2 coverage, I'll take the latter.

True, it could be a plus. But this is talking about basketball and the games are during the week starting at 7 and 8 Pacific time.

Let's see what everyone thinks on this. Please vote!

I think this is a bad poll. The issue of whether North Texas should move to the WAC is more complicated then a yes or no poll. I think there are factors on both sides of the issue that are not yet resolved. When or if C-USA expands then we can revisite this poll.

I voted yes. After seeing what has happened with the Big 12, Big 10, Pac 10, and MWC, I don't think C-USA will have a spot open up, or expand this offseason. Under those circumstances I think it is time to move on. Personally, I'd rather watch us play Fresno St., Hawaii, Nevada, L.A. Tech, and NMSU. I could enjoy watching us play an improving Idaho team too. I'm willing to hold my nose and suffer though games against Utah St., and San Jose St.

i agree. however, problem is that we don't travel. we don't travel to ull, ulm,or ark.st. in numbers beyond 100. i can't see any increase in our fan base going to ruston, and we sure are not going to travel west. its a 12 hour drive to las cruces. also, while we may be willing to hold our nose when playing utah. st. or san jose, would the rest of wac be willing to hold theirs while playing us? ten wins in 5 years in worst 1a program in ncaa doesn't get you many invites. i can find reasons why we would want to join the wac. i just can't find many for them to want us.

I can. The WAC would love to gain a presence in the DFW market, just like the MWC and C-USA has. North Texas would represent the largest media market in the WAC. Adding North Texas would also offer WAC teams a chance to play a few games earlier in the day every season. Also, with the financial issues in Califonia, the WAC would likely welcome a large university with stable funding, especially one that is opening a new football palace.

Idaho Statesman article

Boise move could cost the WAC money

http://voices.idahostatesman.com/2010/06/18/ccripe/boise_states_move_could_cost_wac_money#ixzz0rFIoSdWg

Meanwhile, the WAC is in the process of evaluating its expansion options. Possibilities range from staying with eight members to growing to 12 or more schools, Benson said. Non-football schools will be considered, he said.

Financially, the WAC likely would be better off with eight teams. However, a ninth team would provide a desirable four-home, four-away football schedule and a 10th team would allow for easier basketball travel.

The WAC has pursued North Texas of the Sun Belt in the past and could again. Benson also has talked about adding a school that wants to move up from the Football Championship Subdivision, with Montana as the most intriguing option.

The WAC could make a move in time for the 2011 football season, Benson said. He expects to talk with WAC school presidents about once a week.

Were going to be very deliberate, he said.

.................

The WAC won't expand with an FCS team if they want it in time for the 2011 season./

i am not opposed to the wac, but i would like ark. st . to join as well and make it a 10 school conference with a 9 conference and 3 out of conference games. looks like all Louisiana schools are having financial problems, and i don't want to be out on a limb alone with la.tech. it remains to be seen if ull, and especially ulm, can remain at 1a level. if not, and la. tech rejoins belt, i probably would be o.k. with sitting where we are and see if there is an opportunity in cusa. i still fear smu will kill our chances. tough call to make.wac with Hawaii, fresno st.,and nevada, or belt with troy, middle, and ark.st.

Agreed, that would be a must for any consideration - ASU and perhaps UL and maybe Texas State if they can get their attendance up. Put NMSU and La Tech in the Eastern Division and you have the start of a pretty salty conference. Belt could replace the three schools with UTSA and the impending move up by USA to get back to 8.

In the short-term, the WAC is a step forward but in the long term...

Not that UNT has a natural rivalry, but establishing one in the WAC would be even harder then the "rivalries" in the Belt. UNT would be able to restart a historic rivalry with NMSU, but changing to a conference that doesn't include SMU or TCU isn't a step up.

I've seen Fresno State, Boise State, and Hawaii all ranked at one time or another. I've never seen a Sun Belt team ranked. That makes the WAC a step up to me.

The Southwest Conference had many schools ranked at one time or another. You want to join that? History is history and the Sun Belt is currently much more stable than the WAC. I'm much more interested in what the future holds, and I hope it is not a WAC membership for NT.

They have not been ranked while playing in the Sun Belt at the FBS or D1 level. All of those WAC schools have.

I vote "NO" to the current WAC. I would also vote "NO" to a WAC with an eastern division which included TSU-SM & UTSA - might as well stay in the belt if we're going to play schools moving up. I don't see any CUSA teams, with the possible exception of UTEP, going back to the WAC. And they're not likely to - just as LA Tech won't go back to the Belt because they want to distance themselves from ULM, UTEP wants to distance themselves from NMSU. So only a WAC with an eastern division which included ArkSt & ULL would be a possibility. As for Troy & MUTS, that's spreading things out too much. Keep it west of the Mississippi.

It's probably best to stay in the belt until CUSA breaks up and true regional realignment is possible. ;)
