Latest A&M Realignment Scoop

We reported on the premium board that A&M did receive an unconditional offer yesterday morning. They are working on getting the details worked out and into written form before A&M makes a decision on what to do.

Timing will be everything as Texas and the Pac-16 alliance is pressuring A&M to make a decision, and I could see the A&M admin get nervous and fall in line. Still, the A&M donors have overwhelmingly called the 12th Man Foundation and Bill Byrne to demand that A&M go to the SEC. That has made a difference, as it has caused the decision-makers to take pause and really buy time for the SEC option. They just need to see the details in writing.

Can someone explain to me why Texas doesn't want to go to the SEC? Is it simply because of academics?

PAC 16 -> Texas = The Big Fish

SEC -> Texas = One of a Group of Big Fish

Appears they have the PAC10 offer but some of their backers prefer the SEC & they're trying to sort things out.

I don't think Texas would be superior to USC. At least not once the Trojans get off probabtion -- too much talent in the LA area. They'd be the big fish plural.

In conference politics tho, I think Texas would take awhile to get the prestige of some of the other schools out here. Stanford is good at the political game

USC will be down for at least 5 to 7 years if the 30 scolarships are lost

Of course this super conference we keep hearing about is still like 2 years away right? Also, UCLA might get a lot of the kids that USC doesn't. Wasn't but a decade or so ago that the Bruins were the king of the hill out on the West Coast, could happen again. They don't have the tradition of USC, but they still have a lot of it. Edited by CMJ

More than anything, yes. Their regents take an active interest in making sure every part of the university is as highly rate academically as possible. Academics do still matter.

Plus there is more money in the Pac 16 deal. There is also more money for A&M in the Pac 16 deal, at least for now.

Statesman just said all of the Big 12 suspects have agreed to Pac 10 except for A&M, who is still weighing the SEC.

A&M going for the SEC makes more sense. They've done almost nothing since the 90s except live in the shadows of Austin and Norman.

Living in the shadow of LSU is a risk they'd probably have to take. Florida isn't 100 or 300 miles away. Pretty much they give themselves the option during recruiting to say, "Sure, you could go to Austin and play Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Washington State, etc. Or you could come here and play LSU, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, etc."

Instead of being the 3rd/4th (or worse) pick in the Pac 10 for Texas recruits, they're the 1st/2nd pick in the SEC.

      What's the appeal of Carthel? Honest question. I don't follow FCS closely, but it seems like every time a position opens up at UNT people on the board want Carthel to fill it. I see he won the NCAA Division II championship in 2017 and has an overall record of 89–48 which are both impressive. However, his run at SFA from a W/L perspective looks similar to Seth's at UNT in that he built up the program in a few years, but he seems to be plateauing over the past few years. I'd love to hear more about what the advocates see in him and why he'd be a good fit for UNT specifically.

      Odus Mitchell - What Exactly are Too High Standards at UNT?

I love the legend of Mean Joe anyone under 50 can remember seeing prime NFL Mean Joe playing. There is no Joe Greene in a North Texas uniform without Odus Mitchell. We have low expectations because with dismiss what Mitchell showed us was possible here. Heaps of excuses and disgruntled fans attacking each other on our board. Odus Mitchell is the kind of "Old Denton" I want. And MAYBE if we truly honored him properly and consistently as the MOST IMPORTANT FIGURE in Mean Green Football history we could knock off some of the negative karma. The Mean Joe Coke commercial is cute but is never something remotely associated with UNT Football without Mitchell rebuilding the program from WWII hiatus, winning, integrating CFB in Texas, and bringing Mean Joe to Denton. Hayden Fry doesn't have enough in Denton to come and rescue without Mitchell. How this program has underachieved for 20 years is an insult to his legacy imo. I wasn't alive for his tenure and likely you weren't either. But legacy is about what you can read about when there aren't cute videos!
