Latest A&M Realignment Scoop

We reported on the premium board that A&M did receive an unconditional offer yesterday morning. They are working on getting the details worked out and into written form before A&M makes a decision on what to do.

Timing will be everything as Texas and the Pac-16 alliance is pressuring A&M to make a decision, and I could see the A&M admin get nervous and fall in line. Still, the A&M donors have overwhelmingly called the 12th Man Foundation and Bill Byrne to demand that A&M go to the SEC. That has made a difference, as it has caused the decision-makers to take pause and really buy time for the SEC option. They just need to see the details in writing.

Unconditional offer from the SEC or PAC-10 (or both)? What offer are they waiting to get in writing?

PAC 16 -> Texas = The Big Fish

SEC -> Texas = One of a Group of Big Fish

I don't think Texas would be superior to USC. At least not once the Trojans get off probabtion -- too much talent in the LA area. They'd be the big fish plural.

In conference politics tho, I think Texas would take awhile to get the prestige of some of the other schools out here. Stanford is good at the political game

USC will be down for at least 5 to 7 years if the 30 scolarships are lost

Of course this super conference we keep hearing about is still like 2 years away right? Also, UCLA might get a lot of the kids that USC doesn't. Wasn't but a decade or so ago that the Bruins were the king of the hill out on the West Coast, could happen again. They don't have the tradition of USC, but they still have a lot of it. Edited by CMJ

More than anything, yes. Their regents take an active interest in making sure every part of the university is as highly rate academically as possible. Academics do still matter.

Plus there is more money in the Pac 16 deal. There is also more money for A&M in the Pac 16 deal, at least for now.

A&M going for the SEC makes more sense. They've done almost nothing since the 90s except live in the shadows of Austin and Norman.

So living in the shadow of LSU and Florida is better?

Living in the shadow of LSU is a risk they'd probably have to take. Florida isn't 100 or 300 miles away. Pretty much they give themselves the option during recruiting to say, "Sure, you could go to Austin and play Oklahoma, USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Washington State, etc. Or you could come here and play LSU, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, etc."

Instead of being the 3rd/4th (or worse) pick in the Pac 10 for Texas recruits, they're the 1st/2nd pick in the SEC.
