GALVESTON, Texas - The Southland Conference's Board of Directors has redefined the league's sports sponsorship standards for its member institutions, requiring all institutional varsity sports programs to participate fully within the conference's competitive structure if the league also sponsors the sport.

The decision, with an effective date of July 1, 2011, was announced by the Southland's governing presidential body at the conclusion of the conference's annual spring business meeting Friday. If an institution chooses not to meet this requirement, then it shall relinquish its membership and notify the Conference per the withdrawal provisions listed in Article 3.04 of the league's constitution, which requires a two-year notification of withdrawal or $250,000 penalty.

Gee, the first roadblock for the football power UTSA. Oh wait, they don't play football yet. I wish the UTSA and Texas State-San Marcus lovers on this board would forget about aligning ourselves with these two schools. <_<

Roadrunners football coach Larry Coker issued a statement which seemed to express interest in the university leaving the league.

“We now know what our options are with the Southland Conference,” read Coker’s statement. “We’ll step back and reassess how we can best pursue our vision from this point forward. With the possible changing landscape of conference affiliations, we need to continue to best prepare ourselves for an invitation from an FBS-level conference. That’s our direction and it has not changed.”

Also, UTA's days in the SLC may be numbered without football...

Burnett said the league tabled talk on a measure requiring members to field all league-sponsored sports. This obviously would affect the Islanders and UT Arlington most, with those two being the only conference schools not to field football. Burnett said the issue could be brought up at a president’s teleconference in the fall or during the winter meetings.

Former UNT administrator, now CC AD got a mention...

A&M-Corpus Christi had expressed a desire to host in the past, and Islanders athletic director Tim Fitzpatrick said that has not changed.
