I never, ever, ever agree with EE, but I will this one time. From what I've read, it sounds like an overconfident pilot attempting to land in near-zero visibility in an aging (and likely under-maintained) aircraft.

I was hoping to find something worthy of a conspiracy theory here, since I find those interesting. I think ee has it right though; I only read of a pilot attempting to land in dense fog, against advice of air traffic control, and crashing in a forest instead.
