By next season, I hope he means 2010, not 2011(them damn Yankees never use "next" and "this" properly).

If the defense isn't better in 2010, there will be no 2011 for anyone on this staff.

If this defense can improve this 2010 season like they did the from the previous 12 point improvement, I will be extremely happy and from everything DeLoach has done in the past, I am sure it will come close. But without 7 wins, there won't be a 2011 season for the head coach.
