If Memphis were a "bigger" school with alumni in high places like many of the BCS schools would the NCAA do the same? For some reason I doubt it.

Are you sure about that? One of the wins back in our 10 win season was a forfeit by MSU for ineligible players. This could be different, but that was how it worked back then.

Actually, Michigan had to give up two Final Four appearances (92 and 93). Chris Webber lost his all-american title in the scandal.
