I got to talk with BCS Administrator Bill Hancock on Friday. He was a speaker at a conference I was attending in OKC. He went to the games on Thursday and complimented the North Texas band as the "best basketball band" he's ever heard! Bill has heard a basketball band or two in his day, he was a manager of the NCAA tournament before he went to work for the BCS.

He's also pretty musical...so I give him some credit for knowing what he's talking about!

I highly recommend his book, Riding with the Blue Moth. It's about him taking a cross-country cycling trip while dealing with the loss of his son, Will, who was killed in the 2001 plane crash that took the lives of several members of the Oklahoma State basketball family.

How come K State band always got to play first during every break. They would play so freaking long that we couldnt even complete the fight song. The UNT band finally just started playing at the same time.

I hate the Big 12, even thier sucky bands.

Isn't that part of the UT Bands' repertoire?

Whatever. I followed the UT band around playing that on a trombone for like 5 hours and one of the guys had the nerve to finally turn around, tell me to shut up and then punch me in the face.

Pretty douchey if you ask me. Typical Texas.

I was just wondering, between K-State and UT, who was being (somewhat)original and who was being the copy cat.

BTW, I went to the NCAA fightsong web site http://fightmusic.com/, and found that the Troy Band uses a fanfare to begin their show.

As I pointed out in another thread, the North Texas Band (prior to Dr. Windslow) used to begin it's show with a fanfare. I'd like to see that old tradition revived.

I've heard A&M play it to -- but Texas and K-State really make a big deal of it among their fans when it rings out. Also, Indiana State also loves Wabash.

We could open with "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and then set off explosions around the track for the last home game. I think the band should get to musically tear Fouts to pieces, giving us all unique memories regardless of how the game goes.

Well, your in the correct country. I'm told our fanfare was from Wagner.

Strauss is too highbrow. Why not go with a crowd favorite, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overature? We already have a cannon, and at least a few faithful knowledgeable on its operation, and willing to turn it on Fouts.

My vague recollection from researching a trip recap is that K-State plays Wabash Cannonball because of it's historical significance for their band.

If I remember right, their band facility was destroyed by a fire just before a game of some sort, and the only piece of music they had available for that game was The Wabash Cannonball.

It's a story that was interesting enough to read once, but not enough to Google again.
