Ranger Mgr. Ron Washington

Recommended Posts

Seriously, how is he still manager of this team?

Especially since the incident happened last All Star break. The Rangers have had loads of time to line up a replacement. I'd love to see Mike Hargrove brought in. But anyway, I don't see how Washington kept his job either. If the team starts off slow.....they won't hesitate to can him.

He said he offered to walk away after the positive test last year. Why the hell would you not take Wash up on that offer? 50 year old men don't try cocaine for the first time, as we have now found out with Wash's admissions about his drug usage as a player.

Good God, your star outfielder is a recovering drug addict, and you leave this guy as his manager? I don't know what in the hell the Rangers were thinking, and I frankly expected better from Nolan Ryan.

Just remember that MLB was and still is controlling the club until the sale to Chuck Greenburg is complete. When you are trying to make your club as attractive as possible to a potential buyer, you don't want a story like this leaking out in this era of media.

Nolan, JD, and Thad Levine made the decision to keep him last July after he admitted to it before the test results were known. Keep in mind that Wash also gave the same news to the commissioner's office. With baseball controlling the club and wanting it to be sold just as bad as some Ranger fans, they probably had just as much say about keeping this a 'hush-hush' issue.

Randy Galloway reported that a ticked off employee is the one that leaked this after blackmailing the club for a number of months, which doesn't shock me. Last season, if you remember - the front office and organization trimmed around 15-20% of it's staff. Understandlbly someone was probably upset to lose their job in this economy and used that info as leverage. It is also possible the club floated that story out there to move around some blame, who knows.

Personally, I don't really care, but I probably would have canned him at the time. I don't think wash is the best game day skipper, but his players do like him....which is a lot more than we can say about guys that have rolled through in the past. Although I do understand the tough circumstances that the club has had to endure over the past few years because of a broke owner.

The pending sale as a factor makes sense. But, if you are going to do that, you are going to hide the fact that you have a drug user as a manager from the potential new owner? I guess you could just make Greenberg be the bad guy and spring it on him after the sale, but wouldn't you want to be up front? I guess with Nolan being a part of the ownership group, it softens the blow a little, but Greenberg has got to be thinking WTF? With privacy laws the way they are, maybe Nolan and JD couldn't let the prospective owner know about the situation?

If that is the reason, it is a crappy one. Let's ignore the problem, sell the team, and let the new owner deal with it? I do think that once the sale is final, Wash will be shown the exit at the 1st sign of any problems, either internally, drug related, or record-wise.
