Mean Green Jump Out To First-Round Lead at Rice

HOUSTON (2/10/03) -- The North Texas men's golf team opened the 2003 spring season in style as the Mean Green lead after the first round of the Rice Intercollegiate Invitational at Blackhorse Country Club.

The Mean Green fired a first round 288, even par, to take a three-stroke lead over Northwestern.

Four Mean Green golfers fired an even-par 72 first round to start the tournament off. Zack Atkinson, Brad Besler, Brad Gibson, and Thomas Kulack sit in a share of fifth place individually after the first round at even par, just four shots off the lead. Freddy Espericueta shot a six-over 78 to end the first round tied for 42nd place.

The tournament will conclude Tuesday with a shotgun start from Blackhorse Country Club.
