What in the world do you do with your old computer when you replace it? Our HP's motherboard went out, but the information was still transferrable to our new one(with the $hitty Vista). I thought about taking it out back of the property and pumping some Hydra-shocks into it to kill it real good, but I know that wouldn't completely erase all the information. So what is the best way to completely kill the thing?

If you have no intention of attempting to recycle the old computer, I've read that placing a large magnet in close proximity to a hard drive will destroy the data (along with the drive).

Recycling is for gorecicles.

Just take out the HD and shelf it. You can take a screw driver, open it up and scratch up the discs really good... That takes care of it. Pull off the arms that read... It all will do the trick.

I actually felt kinda bad for suggesting FFR ignore the recycling, but the thing could still be recycled at one of those hazardous materials recycling events. I guess the word I should have used is "reuse". I do consider myself an environmentalist, but don't have much faith in the environmental soundness of the electronics recyling methods in use. I think it just becomes third world hazardous material. I always just wait until I come across someone wanting yesterday's technology to use for surfing the web...oh wait. I only blame Gore for having been an easy target of those who attack environmentalists. It might be better to promote the rights of the next generation to look at a nice big tree while they're out hunting or fishing, along with other rights the conservatives tend to speak out for, like being born, or not inheriting a share of an unseemly national debt (when the other party is in power anyway).

Anyway, I know that FFR likes big old oak trees, and only likes old mesquite trees as firewood, same as I do; there's bound to be some common ground in there somewhere.

Just pull the hard drive and if you have a slot in the Vista machine add it as a second drive if you can. If there is a mismatch say ide to sata you can get an external closure for the old hard drive and it is an instant external drive pull the info off and reformat can be a good back up for music.

If you just want to kill the hard drive beyond any doubt shoot it/drill it and then drop it in some pool acid. Muriatic acid will wipe all the trays.

A Guttman or DOD wipe with a removal program like File Shredder. It'll take a while, so start it and paint your house or something.

I usually follow this procedure, then add some 8mm mauser to the mix.

But that's just for fun, the software stuff should take care of it.

Open up the old HDD and take the platen out. Take a hammer and break it into a million pieces, 5 minutes & you're done.

Or do what I normally do, erase it, reformat it, and fill it with porn. Lock it away from the wifey & kiddos.
