Published reports in Nigeria said Abdulmutallab's father had contacted the U.S. embassy six months ago about concerns his son had become radicalized and could pose a threat to the U.S. One report said the father could not understand why his son was allowed to board a flight to the U.S. given his warning.

And this...is the problem. We'd rather allow entities like Homeland Security take away our freedoms than allow the CIA, FBI, and international law enforcement do their jobs.

There's a saying amongst many in the airline business: "What Mohammed Atta and his thugs started on 9/11 will be finished by fearmongers and the Federal Government...and they'll sacrifice the airline industry in the process". Both sides of the aisle need to man up, call for a more proactive approach, quit worrying about political correctness, and quit with the knee-jerk reactions that make us look weaker and weaker. We've given up so many freedoms because of fear.

Jeebus, I just sounded like a conservative Republican. Dammit.

We do stupid stuff all the time, I love the new rules they are trying to implement. You can't get things out of the overhead or stand up the last hour of flight. WTF does that have to do with anything? Like a terrorist would fine it hard to plan for this. Why would you put anything incriminating in the overheads to Begin with. Would not under the seat in-front of you make more sense? Plus this numb nuts had the device sewed into his pants around his tallywacker and his fellas. Talk about a blow job.

Curious... exactly what freedoms have you given up? I am as free as I was on September 10, 2001.

How about the freedom to stand by the glass and watch planes take-off and land?

...they have an observation area at most airports for a reason.

Non passengers need not be in the terminal. I always through that was stupid.

Well, because we've been so focused on Health-Care, we've sidelined confirmation hearings for the appointments for Transportation Security Administration and the Customs and Border Protection agency according to this article. I guess this begs the question, which me more important: Health-Care or the safety of Americans?

Here's what bothers me...the guy buys a one-way ticket...with cash...has no luggage...is boarding a plane not in his home country and is heading one-way to another country that is not his home country....given all that HOW MANY RED FLAGS TO YOU NEED TO STOP THIS GUY FROM BOARDING??????? Stupid lapse of common sense...and because of the stupidity ever passenger is now subjected to more stupidity. Nothing about the n-air changes would have prevented any of this! You stop these idiots on the ground before they board. Every red flag was there.....I would say the system was a complete failure!

Good grief!!!! Lucky that no one was killed or injured in this terrorist attack. Plain luck here pure and simple. Thank God for luck!

Obama doesn't believe in confirmation hearings. He just appoints Czars to get around the vetting process anyway.

That might explain why it took his administration 8 months to provide nominees for the positions.

You guys are so much better at this than Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Non-passenger restrictions on the concourse were around before 9/11. And I believe non-passengers can still enter the concourse if they make a request in advance.

But, in a philosophical sense, this is not a lost freedom.

I walked my brother to his gate yesterday and watched his plane take off as he took off and headed back to the desert of Iraq.
