She said some 85 percent of the Chinese women in reproductive age use contraceptives, the highest rate in the world. This has been achieved largely through education and improvement of people's lives, she said.

And this from Canada's national newspaper:

The "inconvenient truth" overhanging the UN's Copenhagen conference is not that the climate is warming or cooling, but that humans are overpopulating the world.

A planetary law, such as China's one-child policy, is the only way to reverse the disastrous global birthrate currently, which is one million births every four days.

The world's other species, vegetation, resources, oceans, arable land, water supplies and atmosphere are being destroyed and pushed out of existence as a result of humanity's soaring reproduction rate.

Ironically, China, despite its dirty coal plants, is the world's leader in terms of fashioning policy to combat environmental degradation, thanks to its one-child-only edict.

Yes, which the article later explains would be the goal of the policy - to reduce the world's population so we can be more productive and less destructive.

The rate of childbirth in the western world has in fact slowed during the past 50 years. The biggest population growth is in the 3rd world and in the middle east. Maybe China and Canada can get those folks to slow down.

I've heard before that Iran has one of the highest birth rates of any country, but elsewhere, I heard that sex was such a repressed topic that people had to watch the internet to learn how. Those two ideas seem somehow contradictory. Maybe there's not enough information about contraception on the Internet.

Canadian Financial Post author Diane Francis, and mother of two, meant for EVERYONE ELSE to only have ONE CHILD.

I got married to a Brit, Frank Francis, at 19 years of age and one year later we immigrated to Canada, or Toronto to be precise.

We started a graphic design and typesetting business, Francis Graphics, which became very successful. I left the business to stay at home with our two babies, Eric and Julie, for six years.
