Conveniently, Bcs Wins Again In Texas

On the undercard of the greatest prizefight in San Antonio Alamodome history 16 years ago, between Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker, was another world title bout between Azumah Nelson and challenger Jesse James Leija. But Leija looked more like the champ as the fight wore on.

It wasn't until the scorecards came out that appearances changed. The Xeroxed copies of the cards looked to have suffered some last-second editing.

The fight, which was promoted by the notorious Don King, was ruled a draw. Nelson was King's fighter. Leija got robbed.

I couldn't help but think of that bout as the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday night wound down between undefeated second-ranked Texas and its upset-minded challenger from Nebraska. It felt like somebody got robbed – Nebraska specifically, and, more important, TCU or Cincinnati.

After all, this was a game that ended twice, the first time with the Nebraska Cornhuskers as Big 12 champions with a 12-10 win, and the second time with the Texas Longhorns crowned as 13-12 victors.

Don King's fingerprints weren't on this contest, but the BCS's were. For like King, the BCS always has a vested interest in one contestant over another.

I think everything that happened yesterday is actually going to end up being worse for the BCS supporters. You'll have three undefeated teams left out of the title game in a year when no clear favorite has emerged. Had Texas and Cincy lost, BCS people would say the system worked itself out. This time, it didn't... and it hasn't since 2005. In my opinion, this mess is a perfect storm for serious talk about playoffs.

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini then foolishly allowed his kickoff specialist Adi Kunalic to try a directional kick, rather than a regular or squib, and watched the football bounce out of bounds to allow Texas to start a potential game-winning drive from its own 40.

You see Bo, if your name was Mack you'd get that mulligan on bad decision making, but your name is Bo so you don't.

If I never see or hear that term "Directional Kicking" again it will be too soon.

Umm, if anything - Texas winning yesterday hurt the cartel. Boise will likely get into a BCS game as a result of Nebraska losing. If Nebraska had won, the Big 12 would have gotten two in BCS games and Boise would get left out.

NT will get double the payout because of Nebraska losing yesterday. The WAC and the MWC will be sharing their paydays with the rest of the auto-bid conferences by rule.

I assume you meant NON-auto-bid conferences. But is there really a rule like that?

Yes, I meant non-auto bid... and yes, that is the rule When a team from a non-auto bid conference makes a BCS game, we all (the remaining non auto bid conferences) get double the pie as a normal year. This year, two teams might get in and that has never happened before so I would assume that the share would be split among the non-auto bid conferences just as usual.

Non AQ schools need to tell them to stick their paychecks. TCU and Boise wants a National Champoinship, not money.

---There needs to be an Eight team playoff.... that should include everyone that deserves a chance to be national champion. All eight play a bowl game now.. that would only add three games to the season-- two semi-final games and a final game. The others ( non selected teams) could still go to whatever holiday bowl games. Only one bowl game now actually determines the national champion, the rest do nothing to determine it.

---As for gritching here.... no one is happy with in 5 wins in 3 years.....a team we defeated in a bowl earlier in the decade is now ranked #3...Cincinnati.

$$$$, power and politics................that is the way it has been and always will be.

I once met the man who was the head of the Texas Prison System back in the 30's, 40's and or 50's. I can not remember his name but his nickname was the "Big Stick." He told our group a story of a bus load of convicts unloading in Huntsville and "Big Stick" said he gave his usual speech to the new group and one of the convicts stated that he had heard that there is some "homosexual" activity that happens in prison and what he could do about it. "Big Stick" said he told the new guy that you have two options..........pull down your pants or fight.

things just don't change......be it Florida State "SEMINOLES" (BCS) or Arkansas State "RED WOLVES"........aka Indians (mid major).

Some folks have lost the cajones to fight because it is easier to pull down your pants.

I don't know how long it will take but I believe that it will eventually change. My reasons are that 1) Division 1A football is the only segment of college sports that does not have a playoff system and 2) eventually they will step on enough toes that Congress will take them down as an anti-trust cartel.

GreyEagleOne- I hope you are correct......but IMHO this will "only" happen through Congress.......and......not voluntarily through the current FB administration.

I think this is so because the BCS does not want to "share" the huge profits with the little guys....the mid majors. Who knows the BCS may be "greasing the hands of those who can change it." If Obama can take over the auto and banking industries then he can take over the BCS.

Don't fool yourself--they want the money more. If they didn't, Gary Patterson would be all about the playoff system over the current bowl system. Money rules here.

Or, both think they can keep building up the ladder and have a shot before the current system ends in a few years. It's very possible the winner of this bowl game starts next year in the top 5.

Very true--both can start there. I just think that the BCS money is the biggest gain here, though, not positioning themselves for next year. Because even if both are in top five next year, it will take one loss to wipe out any dreams of those BCS $$ again.
