There is still time for Todge to be let go.

And a RV precedent for almost the identical thing.

Also, per Got5OnIt on another thread, it's possible RV was working on something with another HC candidate behind the scenes and it fell through, given the rumors out there now that RV was talking to candidates.

Assistants are a year to year hire. It's a no-brainer that helping put out the fire in the burning building adds to your resume'.

Not only is it a resume builder, it's a safe one. If it works, you're a hero. If not, then you have the excuse that things were too bad for anyone to save.

I think we can find good, competent and experienced assistants who are willing to come here. I hope we devote enough money to pay them!

I don't think Dodge is a lame duck coach as many of you believe. To give him the ultimatum of winning the conference or coming close next year is an unrealistic expectation given where this team is at today. If he has 5 to 6 wins, he will coach the first game in the new stadium. Just a guess.

If he stays it had better a 7 win mandate at the bare minimum, to not have a winning season after 4 years is ridiculous.

I'm glad there seems to be a decision finally made, but it will still hurt recruiting with Dodge being on win-or-out mode. Any over/under on what the win requirement is for next year? I say 6 (sadly).

IF this is true, it's quite a sad precedent you've set. If you keep on a guy who has won 5 games in THREE YEARS, how can you fire him for DOUBLING his win total in one season? If miracles happen and new assistants help carry Dodge to a 5 win season next year, he's probably fireproof given this precedent.

Then again, I still wonder what coach with 5 or less wins in three full seasons has ever been brought back in CFB history, and what the result was. Also, how many of those had most all of their staff fired along the way. IF this is true, I hate the scapegoating going on, think it's BS, and thing there's still something rotten in Denmark.

Only at North Texas. So I take it the set goals went a little something like this?

Year 1- We're not competetive. We want to get back at least into the pack in the SBC.

Year 2- Ok, so that didn't work. Let's try to just look like we're in some games.

Year 3- Ok, so last season was the worst football every played by anyone, ever. Let's just try to be a competetive team!

Year 4- Ok, so now we're up to the competetive level of a YMCA team that gives participation trophies to every kid. Alright!!! This season let's try to be a .500 team.

My, my, my how quickly we are forced to back down from the simple goals that EVERY other team in the country takes for granted.

I totally agree with King that it's absurd to hope for .500 in year four of a coach - ABSURD! - especially in this conference. Frankly, I think it's absurd if he really is back, while scapegoating his whole staff over three years.

and NT80 - I agree! But given that 5 wins in 3 YEARS was acceptable, can't you see RV keeping Dodge next year after 5 wins in one season? It's STUPID, period... but I can see it.

I just think if you set this precedent, that the improvement has been justified to keep Dodge on regardless of changes, IMAGINE next year at 5-7. Hell, over half of this stinkin' board wanted him back with 5 wins in THREE YEARS. If he wins 5 next year, you'll hear extension talk. Guaranteed. F'ing RIDICULOUS, but guaranteed.

He could still be fired. Maybe Dr.B wont agree to this proposal?

Geez, it's got to be low. We kept Dodge around this year because he lost by less than previous years. He's only beaten 3 really crappy teams since he's been here (ULM, Ball, WKU), and we have no indication he can compete in the Sun Belt.

I would say 3 wins and some closer margins of loss and he's still here for the year of the new stadium. Progress is progress in RV's eyes. We are always rebuilding here, why stop the tradition.

The real question lies with the players. Several players opted out of this program because of the leadership and direction. As it turns out, the guys who left were right about what was going to happen this year. Now there are rumors that TD has lost the confidence of many of the players who stayed this season. Which players will leave the program this off-season, and how does that affect the outcome of this coming season? Seems like we are in an endless downward spiral. How does a head coach on "paper-thin" ice get the confidence up in the players who have already lived this nightmare for two years, or three years? I'm going on record right now... If Lance Dunbar leaves, I'm a Texas State Fan next season. At least we had one of our own wear the Armadillo Suit!

GMG!!!

You couldn't be more right. I can see Kram and a few othe apologists screaming from the hilltops that "Todd Dodge went from 2 wins to 5 wins in one season! Told you were just a year away from starting to turn the corner, next year we're gonna go to a bowl!!" Pathetic doesn't do it justice.

Yeah, and if he did those things at Air Force.....he was coordinating and coaching players in the wishbone. The wishbone. So I'm not sure the spread would be his area of expertise.

It was the Flexbone.

The upshot, if this is what is occuring, is that we have good tailbacks...and Petersen would also possibly lobby for a...drumroll, please...fullback or two! Also, he has experience in designing offenses where the quarterback isn't standing in the shotgun 100% of the time.

Again, if this happens, I don't think Petersen changes the big picture of what Dodge does. I think we'll still be a pass-first team. But, I think Petersen and Dodge together could easily scheme in what Petersen knows in order to get the maximum production out of our tailbacks...and, again...the possibility of FULLBACKS!!!
