OK, I know many of you will yawn and disregard this topic...OK...no problem, but are others out there in cyberspace as disappointed as I am that Obama will use the back drop of West Point to make his troop/Afghan speech this evening on national TV? John Cary's committee report has come out just in time to give Obama "cover" for his actions and a reason to blame the Bush Administration for him having to make this decision at all...and to waste money and time going to West Point and face those wonderful young men and women who will soon be risking their lives in defence of their nation is a bit much for me. The speech should be presented from the White House and not any military academy.

OK, that's all....

Let's just imagine if McCain won the election. Would you feel the same way?

Probably not, McCain has proved to be a hero tested under fire. The Cadets at West Point would respect him for the fire he has been under and they would know that he fully supported their efforts.

Just a slight difference I would say. As to the aircraft carrier comment, I figured someone would find a way to bring Bush into the question...nicely done...however, Bush, too, as did McCain has an actual service record.

However, I would say for Bush, McCain, Obama, etc....this speech needs to made from the White House...not out "grandstanding" at West Point. Obama never knows when to stop campaigning for his next election race...plus his teleprompter is all set up at the White House.

Not a big McCain fan, but if he were President, this decision was made 4 months ago, and would have been done without wasting an hour of TV time for self promotion. But, hey, we're a society that thinks getting on TV is the quentisential moment of a lifetime, so why wouldn't we elect a president with the same values.

Sorry classic, but you mentioned Bush first in this thread. I'm just saying......:D

What, as opposed to the "old" war tax?

I am sorry what was that? I must have missed it, they are talking about a real tax now.

Lets face it, Barry Obama is one of two things. Either a Communist or a Terrorist. His act of bumping A Charlie Brown Christmas off the air is just un-American. And if your not for America then you're either a Communist or Terrorist. Simple as that.

By you're line of reasoning all speaches from the Executive Branch should be delivered from behind the desk in the oval office. I've always wondered why Presidents waste time and gas money to face all those wonderful old Congressmen by driving over to the Capitol Building to deliver the State of the Union address. They're already in office!! QUIT CAMPAIGNING!!1!

When I was in the service, our group recieved many notices from the President. I would read them to my guys or a higher up would read the messages to all of us. A common theme was that we wished the President would show his face and tell us personally what he had to say; tell us personally that we were at war and he decided to continue the war. The president at the time did not do that. We received war messages from a telograph type system (in the 90's). President Obama went to West Point and looked all of those in the face that will soon be deployed and will soon have to lead our country in a war and told them his reasoning. As a serviceman, you are always pleased to see the support by others when they show up at the front lines, attend a USO event, or speak to a group of servicemen. I think that is much better than being a desktop jockey. I think President Obama did a good job and I enjoyed watching those cadets jumping the seats to shake his hand.

Thanks for your service EagleGreen, but I must disagree...as a Vietnam era vet, I had no desire to see LBJ's face in person as I knew what it would entail...a lot of unneeded prep, being told when to show up, how to dress, what to say or not say, when to act "interested", etc., etc. Most of the "presidential" visits were all for show as was Obama's last evening. Anyway, he can read very well.

Did anyone else notice the number of Cadets that appeared to be taking a "nap" during the speech and all the "polite applause"? Hey, those young men and women work hard and endure long days...a little cat nap here and there is just fine with me...even if Reagan were doing the speaking.

Thank you too. I was based out of Florida for a while. When folks would visit me, they always wanted to go to Disney World, MGM, etc. Whenever I would sit down to ride a ride (other than a coaster), or listen to a "show", I would always doze off. In many of the "important" meetings, following a midnight watch, I would become a bobble head too. Servicemen and women put in a long, difficult day and a little shut eye just happens. I used to try and lift my feet off the ground to stay awake; it would just result in a louder thud during the bobble head routine. :) Good memories.
