Weatherbie At Ulm

If Dodge were to go 22-5 in the Belt from this point forward, he'd match the 24-25 Sun Belt record that got Weatherbie fired.

Minus the SBC co-championship and road win against Alabama.

Just to put that in perspective... Coming into this year, Larry Blakeney was already arguably the second best coach in Sun Belt history. His 4 year record up through last year, including 3 conference championships? 21-7.

Drop his worst year and include this undefeated conference season, and Blakeney's record goes up to 26-3... That would do enough to get Dodge just barely over .500 in conference by the end of year 7. IF he can match the second greatest coach in conference history, with 3 1-loss seasons and an undefeated one.

If Todd Dodge is retained and told to make some changes to his coaching staff, this might be a place to look for some replacements. They looked like a pretty well coached team when we played them.

And they already know our audibles and signals. So the learning curve wouldn't be very steep.

Well played.

Weatherbie was a career 31-51 at ULM, and was 24-24 in the SBC. In his first three seasons, he was 11-23. In his last three, he was 16-20.

...but then again, who are we to have the lofty expectations of Louisiana-Monroe?

ULM thread lists some folks they're supposedly talking to

Petrino supposedly had the WKU job all but in hand, until Taggart knocked them over and Harbaugh sealed it by vouching for him. He's turning into a Sun Belt groupie... If we decide to interview him for an opening here, make sure he takes a blood test first- No telling what he's caught in Monroe and Bowling Green.

Unbelievable. This was a guy who just went 6-6 with new QBs. Did someone give ULM some money or what?

To me, this kind of firing is absurd. The guy overachieved with the roster he had this year. But, I suppose ULM is raising the stake.

If, as some posters on their board suggest, they are really going after the youngest Stoops brother, you've got to wonder where the money is all of the sudden coming from. Weatherbie was one of the lowest paid coaches in college football. I think Mark Stoops made double what Weatherbie makes.

If they can pull off hiring someone like that, and we stand pat...we are really falling further behind.

Yeah. I remember. That was my first year at UNT.

I didn't understand it then...and, I don't understand it now. We traded his competitive football for a high school coach from Marshall. So stupid.

Well, really the true crime in all of it was the fact that we not only fired Corky, but fired him then turned down Paul Johnson for the high school coach from Marshall who had never even assist coached in college before.

Wait, let me get this straight. You can not only strive to be "competetive" while asking people to pony up their hard earned money but you can also demand that your program constantly move up the college football ladder????? I guess I shouldn't be surprised though. ULM does have superior recruiting grounds.....what's that, they don't? Oh, but they do have superior facilities...what, we're building a new stadium? Oh hadn't heard that. Surely they have a more attractive locale to recruit to...oh, they don't? I give up then. Why IS a school with so much less to offer than us not satisfied with standing pat and hoping for a coaching turnaround that is astronomically more likely than the one that 50% of our devoted fan base thinks Santa will be bringing down the chimney?

Here is another ridiculous theory, and since this is a message board it fits perfectly. Maybe ULM got to the point where they couldn't afford Weatherbie. His first few years he was paid $1 or something crazy like that because Navy was still paying his contract. Thats long gone and the money they saved those years were rolled into what they were paying him at the end. they couldn't afford to keep paying the salary so they cut him loose and bring in an assistant from somewhere that they can have on the cheap. If you think our financial situation is tough, any school in Louisiana (minus LSU) is in very serious trouble. I think the attendance was less than 4K for their final home game against the muts with a bowl trip on the line and a couple hundred for the monsoon game against Arkie St. This will be an interesting hire to watch.
