Yes, we redshirted him because he was behind Riley and Tune on the depth chart. If Riley and Tune go down against Army last week, Thompson still would have played this weed.

But we played him in the final minutes of the final game of the season ... a losing season ... where nothing was on the line.

You don't see the difference between playing a redshirt for an entire game and bringing him in for a nearly hopeless comeback attempt with 2:33 left?

And no timeouts. And down by two scores.

So you're sayig that you should only try to win a game up to a certain point and not until the clock hits zero?

Guys, look...I'm no ardent Dodge backers, but be realistic. We were in a situation where we needed to throw the ball to score quickly. No way we scored that last touchdown out of the Wildcat. Thompson gave us the best chance to complete the comeback.

No way we come back in that game. NO WAY!! Stupid decision not to leave Thompson at home and bring Bain in the first place. Why would you bring someone on the last trip of the year when you were going to redshirt him for the year? Why do you bring him over Bain??

I really think this cements Dodges fate, if there was any question left.

What did he say?

"We had to throw the ball."

I hate quitters, but if Thompson's father wants to pull a Matt Vizza first thing Monday morning I'd applaud him for it.

Dodge burned his own son't redshirt last year in an effort to win. Coaches do that. It got reversed by an injury, but you deal with the players left on the sidelines. It sounds (from the post game interview) that Dodge will not be back next year. It sounds very much that way, he seemed to be saying goodbye.... please do not turn him into a Dickey. The man has not seen success but has been a CLASS ACT the entire time. Do not make this out to be a revenge thing. That is the anger and emotions of a fan dealing with another loss being redirected to a man that would never hurt a young man's future (ever). Todd Dodge is a lot of things but he is not a vengeful person. He has those kids backs and most of them appreciate that. They do not appreciate losing - but they appreciate that he cares for them.

He was fully aware that he was burning Thompson's redshirt and there was no regret in his voice whatsoever.

Yea, he said he was "in the moment" while telling the the defense to make at stop and that we will march down and make a a score.

I would of done something else instead of burning Derek's redshirt.

You guys are going over the top, Dodge did what he thought he had to do regardless of what anyone on the board likes. He did not intend to have his first two QB go down, but Derek was in line so he used him. Everyone's favorite choice obviously not, but not anything to get back at North Texas.

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

bye bye redshirt........

It feels weird to be defending Dodge. But, you play to win and that's what the man did in that situation.

I'm happy that Thompson did well. And, you never know...once you stop knee-jerking, consider this:

-If Dodge is fired, the new coach will likely bring in a JUCO anyway, so Thompson can redshirt next year.

-If Dodge isn't fired, Riley and Tune are back, so Thompson can redshirt next year.

-Either way, Thompson isn't likely to start next year anyway, so he can redshirt next year.

Who is the coach and who is the player? Who is the adult in this instance? So if a kid wants to do something foolish, let them?

I agree. As the coach, TD is trying to win the game immediately before him. I'm no apologist for Dodge, but if you field 2 qbs, and they both go down, the most logical choice is to go to the next one on the roster. He may or may not be with us next year, and i doubt anyone is 100% sure whether he is or not, I'm sure he didn't do this act out of spite for the program.

What did he say?

He said that he told the defense if they made that final stop, the offense would go down and score, they'd onside and score again to win the game. They made the stop, Tune couldn't lift his arm so they went with the freshman. He said they could've play one of the 2 ex-hs qbs but with so little time left they had to throw the ball to score quickly enough to honor his word to the defense. He is an honorable man. You guys don't care about this team, you just care about what YOU have to put up with, not these kids that sweat and bleed for this man.

Thank you for this post Stebo, I agree wholeheartedly. Dodge has never been anything other than a class act.

Seems the only thing you care about is making excuses, any kind, for what has happened to these kids at the coaching hands of Todd Dodge! I doubt you give a rats a&% about anything but Todd Dodge. Hows that for labeling?

how do you know it was foolish and why don't you apply for the head coaching job. you sure seem to know everything!
