I say this because I wasn't able to make the game. One of my profs was there and said it was like watching two sloppy drunks in a bar fight. This sounds accurate from what I was able to hear on the radio.

With the possible exception of Dunbar's TD run, It wasn't a thing of beauty. Still, and being there, I was sure wishing we could have won ugly. As Darrell Royal said, "Old ugly beats old nothing".

I second that opinion.

Scary that Army may actually be in a bowl game.

Amazing isn't it? If you can win 6 games these day, regardless of who they are against you get into a bowl game these days....and probably why we will never see a playoff.

Remember when there was a time when you could win 5 games and make a bowl game? Ah, the good old days.

North Texas almost went to the Humanitarian Bowl in 1998 with a 3-8 record. :o

UNT (3-8) finished the Big West race 3-2 and owned tiebreakers over Idaho (4-1) and Nevada (3-2).

"The Vandals cruised through the season with a 7-3 record heading into a final showdown against Boise State. They needed to win against Boise to clinch the Big West title and the school’s first bowl bid. Trailing 28-35 in overtime, the Vandals scored what might have been the tying touchdown, but the Broncos called a timeout to try to ice kicker Ben Davis on the extra point. The Vandals shocked BSU by sending the offense back out for a gutsy two-point conversion attempt, which Joel Thomas scored to give Idaho a 36-35 victory."

Had Idaho lost that overtime last game, the Big West would have been obligated to give UNT the Bowl invite (this was also before the 2001 UNT (5-6) rule change that said Bowl teams must have 6 wins). BTW, Idaho was underdogs in the Bowl but beat USM. Ah, what could have been History for UNT!

Actually, there was no rule change. There has been a provision for conference champions to go to bowl games regardless of the number of wins for many years and the provision is still in place. Here's good old 30.9.2.3 :

Waiver for Conference Champion. [FBS] The Leadership Council, by a two-thirds majority of

its members present and voting, or a committee designated by the Leadership Council, may approve a waiver of

the six-victory requirement to enable a conference champion to participate in a bowl game when the conference

champion is scheduled contractually to participate in the game. (Adopted: 1/12/93, Revised: 10/28/97, 11/1/07

effective 8/1/08)
