A coach just doesn't say he may not be back next season if he has ANY hope to cling to. I think he's already been fired.

Are you sure you don't want to call and time out (or two) and think about that opinion?

Well, that could explain the complete meltdown in game (and especially clock) management. Even before the consecutive timeouts, there was a series where we were at 3rd and 1 (some point in the game), call a time out, go back out and can't get a play off before being called for delay of game. And I thought it odd that, after the offense turned it over at least 3 times in the first half (and at least 2 of those on Riley), that Riley and some others were back on the sideline with 5 or more minutes left of halftime. It seemed like it could have been a teaching opportunity for the offense at that point.

Agreed!

A coach who still wants his jobs says things like "6 and 5 is not good enough"

When I saw this statement, my initial thought was "why would you publicly say something like this when you are still going to have to recruit IF you keep your job." I know we only have a few commitments, but why risk losing those with that kind of statement? I wonder if goals were set in the meeting after last season that have not been met. That may be why TD seems so down after the last couple of games.

If he does go, it is just a shame that this didn't work out. TD appears to have the right priorities for his players, has been a great "face of the program", promoting UNT at every turn. Hell, he even looks like a football coach. If only the wins would have come.

Flyer,

I was at the coach's show today...sat at table next to RV. He did not seem upset, and stayed through the whole show. I did not get the sense a man pondering the future of the head football coach. Of course he sure did not lean over and tell me directly what he was thinking, but I believe from what i saw and heard today that Dodge will be back. Now if you are so sure about next Tues, please let us all in as why you feel so strongly there will be a change. You are putting as much energy into the fact there will be a change as cr1028 is coming on here SELLING (as if any of us really have a say) to give Dodge another year. So, what is your basis, any inside info?

he 's already shed tears... See the Fiu post game show. Oh wait you can't. But we all heard it.

Agree. It's usually along those lines as the first thing a fired coach says if he doesn't want to talk about it yet before it's official. A coach also doesn't just kill his recruiting season by saying "I don't know if I will be back". What recruit wants to sign up to that coaching security? I think the decision has already went down.

He is a class guy. It was all there except for the winning.

I dunno, I really don't think that the trigger gets pulled this season. There is the cost involved - we just finished paying off the Dickey contract. I imagine that RV was much like I am with my employees when they are not performing... very vague. Perhaps Dodge is trying to get an answer through the media... maybe RV told him that there had better be some improvement by the end of the year and he thought that FIU and Army were his best shots at wins... the ASU team is beat-up but they are still a talented bunch. I really don't know if we have the money to fire him in the middle of a stadium campaign. Remember, the student fee does not kick in until the stadium is completed. So we might be in for one more season of Dodge Ball - it's Wide Open! Personally, I hope that he gets another year. I would like to see his hard work pay off. I hope that we get a kicker in here that can actually hit an extra point... I hope that Deloach stays on the sidelines... and I hope that we get rid of Ford. Those will be the final changes and take away the last excuses. Our kicker lost that game on Saturday... he is absolutely not a Div I caliber kicker.

Of course, Dodge could always be reassigned and Deloach could be promoted to head coach... that would get us around the cost thing, sort of.

How are our kicker recruits for next year?

Hopefully Atterbury kicks as well as punts.

He's kicked FG's of around 55 yards in high school, for what that's worth. Sorry, I don't have time to look for the link right now. Still, we'll need more than one good kicker/punter; what if he did both and got hurt, with no reliable replacement. Also, we've got to get that blocking accomplished; I still say those blocking our kicks are coming free.

Dude, if the trajectory is too low, it doesn't matter if they don't break through...just an uplifted arm or the helmet of a jumping lineman will do.

Every blocked, kick or punt, has been due to a missed blocking assignment or two. Trajectory doesn't matter if there is no time for the ball to get up in the air. There was a new addition to the Punt Team Saturday as a result of the blocked punt from the week before, notice any improvement this past Saturday? For those that don't pay attention, we lost Deep Snapper Christian Davidson for the season on the 2nd punt last week and our next punt was blocked. Troy Kokjohn has taken over and he performed well in the Army game.

Dude, the fact is, on that blocked FG Saturday, they DID break through. This isn't really to defend Knott so much, because he did have a flat out missed PAT and a short kickoff just minutes before, but this Upstate NY beat writer describes what I saw:

Army special teams play

And I hate to point out the above, because in many ways, ST has improved under Gandy. Still, I don't care what FFR says, low trajectory wasn't the cause of that blocked FG, and certainly not the blocked punts in earlier games (hey, let's admit it, teams started doing that to us beginning with MTSU this year, and kept after us-don't you think they saw something watching film that made them thing they could?); at least one of those blocked punts I saw had the guy blocking it coming around left end.

Yes, we need a better kicker, and yes, we need better protection for whoever is kicking or punting. And yeah, as much as I love Shelton Gandy, maybe we need some help coaching/mentoring kickers, whatever. Hell, I'll even concede one to that consultant loving UNT_Playmaker, bring in a kicking consultant if we can't afford to hire someone who knows how to coach kicking. Hell, tell Gandy/Dodge to swallow their pride and beg the previous S/C coach who was reported to coach kickers BACK to help out, have RV order the guy to help, if that's what it takes. Anything, but don't continue down this kicking game regression. If it's all on Knott, fine, but please, someone tell me how he screwed up the punting game.

I didn't say a thing about blocked punts. My comment earlier was on the final kick. But really, I'll take the word of the ex NFL Pro field goal kicker standing next to me in the stands after the blocked kick over yours any day.

this is the point where the a.d. steps in and issues the calming statement and says the coach has his full support, yada yada

we have not heard that yet.

maybe rv is waiting till after ark state game to evaluate but why would coach question status now instead of saying same, plus hurt recruiting?

noticed also while dodge was on the stage at groundbreaking he didn't get to speak, strange for a facility being built for his team.
