The $100 Million Health Care Vote?

What does it take to get a wavering senator to vote for health care reform?

Here’s a case study.

On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster.”

The section spends two pages defining which “states” would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that “during the preceding 7 fiscal years” have been declared a “major disaster area.”

I am told the section applies to exactly one state: Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill.

So basically Harry Reid is putting a knife to Landrieu's throat. If she votes for the bill she helps sink our country. If she votes against it she kills her own career of ever being reelected in Louisiana for turning down $100 Million in aid?

Along with the KSM decision last week this is a new low.

Not saying I agree with it, or that I like Harry Reid...but that's some damn fine political maneuvering.

The system is the problem Rick, not Reid even though I don't like him. His goal is to get a bill passed and he is just using the system in place to his best advantage. Frankly you could make the same argument on the other side where many Republicans have received major donations from health insurance companies and pharma. Corporations should not be able to influence legislators but you and I both know it happens every day on both sides of the aisle. Landrieu was recently re-elected so my guess is she may be more worried about the fact she has taken a lot of health care and insurance money herself.

Obama campaigned on changing this corrupt lobby and special interest system and to this point he hasn't done very much. My simple opinion is you give candiates a set budget to run on and make it illegal for them to receive donations from lobbyists and special interests. This would force the candidates to run on their own ideas and implement laws that reflect the constituency who got them to Washington in the first place. Probably will never happen but one can dream eh?

On the KSM thing I will say this,

He may have made a case for throwing his hat in the ring for the Republican party ticket with that performance!

Unfortunately, this would surely be struck down by the courts as unconstitutional. I think term limits is the only path has has a chance of surviving the inevitable court challenge from the incumbents.

______________

We all know this pork or whatever the nomoclature is for these particular bribes will continue due to the coruptness of Congress. Democrats and Republicans are all guilty. To even entertain a realistic vision of "change" is like believing in the Tooth Fairy or one hundred people walking into an insurance agency in one day and all getting $5,000,000 worth of term insurance. Lawyers in Congress make laws for lawyers in Congress. Legalized stealing......what else can you call it?

Right. You can't make donations illegal, because campaign donations are considered speech.

Term limits are not the answer either.

The best defense against a corrupt government is an informed and active citizenry.

We have term limits. However, we call them elections...they happen every two, four or six years depending.......
