Thank you, sir...I was quite proud of that one-liner and thought it would derail the homophobia-train.

Sadly...

Nice name calling. Everyone on here is talking about the effect this non-sensical vote is having on the publicity for the stadium and recruiting for the school, so I guess we are all homophobes? But, guess I should expect as much from you.

I'll be out on season tickets and support next year if this passes. It has been a non-stop jokefest at UNT's expense all week where I work, when I call other associated businesses, and even from my next door neighbor.

CBL, I wish you lived in the area and could experience the joke that your university has become over this one issue. It has been on every local newscast multiple times and is hugely overshadowing any publicity that the stadium groundbreaking would have generated. Must be nice to live thousands of miles away where you are unaffected by this vote.

If the "liberal East coast" is anything like the "hippies" out in California, I'm sure CBL has a good idea what the teasing is like. Almost everytime someone finds out I hail from the great state of Texas I get all sorts of teasing about the "backwoods" state I'm from. Some of it good natured, some not.

Grow a little backbone.

You know I travel quite a bit, and I go back to New York to visit often and I have never caught any BS over being from Texas. Hell in the New York the taxes alone make most envious. But it is upstate NY not too liberal there mostly in the City.

I want the university to elect a Common Sense Panel....

Why doesn't the university just say, "In order to not exclude anyone, we will have one male and one female in the homecoming court." If a gay male or gay female want to run, fine, who cares or needs to know what their preference is. But we will have one male and one female. I'm pretty sure those are still the two dominant sexes in the world. If two gay males are chosen, then females are excluded and vice versa, right?

I may be wrong, but I believe that was the implied rule but that notion was rejected by the protesting group who insisted on the ability to nominate couples of the same gender.

A few points on this.

1.) Yes it will be used against the university when recruits are visiting with other coaches.

This seems laughably paranoid to me. A coach recruiting against UNT has so many arrows to sling against the school -- the facilities, the record, Coach Dodge's ineptitude, the Sun Belt -- that he would never need to resort to an appeal to homophobia.

I don't see why this is a big deal. So what if the media covered it because the idea of a same-sex homecoming couple is a novelty. Next week the Virgin Mary will appear on a taco supreme and it will be forgotten by 99.99 percent of the population.

If students want to elect a same-sex couple to homecoming court, they should be able to do that. It's an award of their choosing. When I was a student, several friends tried to elect Hector the Eagle Dog and Agnes the Squirrel as the homecoming king and queen. Sadly, they lost.

Please, lets not use the stadium vote and now recruiting as some kind of shield for why this has so many of you up in arms. You know why theres not much publicity for the stadium? We suck, Dallas likes winners. You know what might hurt recruiting? 5 wins.

If you want to take a stance on this issue one way or the other, fine. But lets not continually try to justify our stances with an asinine thread like this.

If a gay couple is represented at homecoming you'll be out on season tickets? And you're upset at my use of the word homophobia?

I imagine 'Bama lost a lot of season ticket holders when Autherine Lucy took her first class or Wilber Jackson first suited up.

I'm sorry your friends' and co-workers' jokes have affected you to the point you'd stop supporting your school. On multiple levels, I'm sorry

It will have absolutely NO effect on recruiting. It is just so UNT these days to do something like this. It is amusing to me that the student government caved in to this thing and set it for a student vote in the first place, but that's UNT these days...and many other colleges and universities, by the way. It's really no big deal in the bigger scheme of things.

The only thing that really bothers me are all the name calling going on by the supporters of the position against those who dare to oppose the proposition. Sad...I guess you can only be "open and welcoming" if you believe the same way they do...sad...but, typical of how things seem to go these days. Too bad.

No, I don't think you would change your position if you experienced the media attention, your post on political threads make that perfectly clear, but I do think you may understand how MUCH pub this has gotten and how backhanded some of that pub has been.

I don't care about two dudes being homecoming King or Queen, I care about how that makes UNT appear to everyone else. It makes us appear to be a stupid little Lib arts school that isn't serious about anything, much like nominating a chipmonk would if it had gotten this much publicity.

The reason I will walk away is the fact that this a final straw that just demostrates how inept this school is in promoting itself and it's program. Why would you schedule this vote to end on this weekend!!!

Yes, you were name calling and stereotyping. Isn't there a word for that?

This will be used in recruiting. Just one more thing.

Really?

Boy it sux to only have 2 wins:)

I went round and round with some canadiens last night that can't believe our country's opposition to universal health care. He found out I was from Texas and boy did I do our state proud. The Texas spirit is about freedom - UNT is about freedom on roids.

Those co-workers have an interesting road ahead of them if they think this is unacceptable! Good grief - get us to 3 please!

They think it is a joke, not unacceptable.

Hey guys you should bring this discussion to the "The Eagles Nest (formerly Non-Unt Sports)" forum I have been looking for more activity there. And of course the "The Eagles Nest" is where this crap belongs, don't worry it won't have much effect on recruiting. Only a few will remember this embarrassment for long. I have had my nose rubbed it for days, and it makes me sick. Just old UNT where anybody's activist agenda can make center stage for the Metroplex, and it never stops.

This hardly seems like a specific failing of UNT. I went to four schools and was involved in student government at all four. They all caused some trouble and got some publicity, not all of it welcomed by the university community.

But so what? The way some people are talking about how this reflects poorly on UNT sounds like their own inferiority complex about the school. UNT is not going to be affected one iota by this in the long run. It's a freaking homecoming controversy.

Posted

I don't give a rat's ass about the issue itself, it is the fact that the University and the SGA mismanaged the situation and timing so poorly. It is the typical handing of the message by this University and its organizations that bothers me the most. We have a service academy coming to town. We are breaking ground on a HUGE project that will change the face and course of our University, and the message coming from Denton is "Gay Homecoming Court".

FAIL!

Hey, kid, didn't you hear about UNT? What a joke that school must be! Not only that gay homecoming thing, but they've got an unofficial mascot that's an albino squirrel! Heck, kid, they couldn't even get a gray squirrel! It's an albino, just like that creepy killer with the chains and stuff in The DaVinci Code! Did you see that movie? I don't know if any of that stuff in that movie was true, but there's one thing that you can take to the bank: You don't want to meet some hot girl at a party and tell her you play football for a gay colorless self-flagellating squirrel school, do you? I mean, I know I wouldn't. So what say, kid? Can we count on you?

In the long and stupid history of stupid, this thread qualifies as really stupid.

Really? Tell that to the co-worker I brought to the Ohio and WKU games (luckily). The one who was contemplating buying season tickets for his family of 4. The one who told me that he doubts that will happen now.

But, hey, who needs them, right?

If they are that simpleminded, then oh well. Just because people are gay doesnt make them any different from anyone else. I dont want to know what they do in their bedroom, just like i dont want to know what straight couples do in their bedroom. I lot of the people on this board must not have ever been around many gay people in their life, my goodness. This is the most ignorant thread i have ever seen on this board, period.

I believe we have a winner!

TheColonyEagle has a point, and it's exactly what I first thought as well... just stop running King & Queen as a couple, hold individual elections like every other school I'm aware of, and done. In fact, not realizing how big this thing would get and having some time to kill on campus, I made this suggestion two weeks ago on the NT Daily website in response to the editorial board endorsing voting "YES". However, that was not a suitable solution for those who disagreed with the SGA's initial decision. For perspective, here are some reader comments from the Daily's website on why the split vote wasn't acceptable:

Jake R. says:

Because to those who it really affects and opens doors for, deciding to revert back to individuals running for homecoming court is the same as saying, “Now that it’s a big issue, I’m uncomfortable with handing out equal opportunity for all so we’re going to SWEEP this under the rug, IGNORE the civil liberties issue altogether, and HALT this particular kind of advancement for LGBT people at UNT.” Homecoming is such a simple thing. If equal opportunity can’t be given on that stage, I wonder where my equal opportunity will be forbidden next at this university. Why should I not want equal opportunity at any and every level? If LGBT people and our friends cease asking and/or demanding our equality at the smallest levels, we might as well start giving away what little rights the majority of Americans have ‘blessed’ us with because those rights are small too. Long before homecoming courts were a tradition, it was an American tradition to spred the equality, equal rights and protections, and equal opportunity to the next Americans who were denied and LGBT people should take equality like a flag of a nation that is rightfully ours too.

Luke says:

Splitting the couple vote fixes nothing. Gay copules should be able to run because as a school we shouldn’t be saying gay couples cannot represent UNT. The idea that a man and a woman are the only or better choice for a family is demonstrably false as well as offensive

Luke says:

November 3, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Also, the idea that gays are represented by running as a heterosexual pairing is blatantly false. We need to allow gays to run as same sex pairs so that we are not continually stating that heterosexual pairs are superior.

Luke says:

November 3, 2009 at 7:18 pm

CG, a split run still sends the mesage that heterosexual couples are the only couples that represent UNT because it is a heterosexual pairing. So a agy man and gay woman winning still sends the message that it takes a man and a woman to be a couple that represents UNT. This is exclusionary and false. Letting same sex couples run is the only non exclusionary choice.

People fighting for gay rights aren’t trying to win a game. They are trying to get rights that gays already are entitled to

The number of articles on this issue should be indicative of how strongly people feel about this, and hashing things out is anything but an “epic timewaste”. In fact, I think it’s obscene to call it an epic timewaste considering that this is taking place within the context of a society which inflicts institutionalized oppression against queer people.

As I said in another thread CG, your “split vote” compromise changes absolutely nothing. The argument that your proposed gender binary is the only way to properly represent the student population at UNT does not reflect reality. Folks who do not fit neatly into these categories simply want the opportunity to represent alternative forms of human expression. And as long as forces exist which seek to actively suppress these alternative forms of human expression, there will be conflict. Keep in mind that the very notion of queer identity wouldn’t exist had it not been at least in part for the collective realization of a group of folks with a common interest that they’re all being screwed over for the same reason.

Please understand, I don't consider myself to be anti-gay. And though I disagree with this whole thing, I realize that I can't possibly appreciate the perspective that has led certain people to feel the way they do. My distaste for the whole thing is simply the making of an issue for the sake of making an issue. There is no actual "progress" to be gleaned from such an insignificant, trivial thing, and I feel the whole thing is a waste of time, energy, and advantageous timing. Protesting for gay marriage - I get that. Protesting for partner's benefits - absolutely. But this, IMHO, is missing the point, and was compounded by an impotent SGA and scared or oblivious administration... because no matter how silly you think it all is, it's the biggest story about our university in a while, and it sticks to the name and the degree - at least for a little while. Do I think it hurts recruiting?? HA. We could have an all male sailor-themed baby oil party in the Union every Friday night and it wouldn't hurt recruiting more than Football Trilli has. I am, however, concerned about the potential impact on older alums and certain potential donors... I think it's a foolish time to take an insignificant moral stand that risks alienating some important people, especially given UNT's position.

On the other hand, it could be exciting that a couple of kick-ass frat dudes could now run together for the hell of it. Or a pair of smokin' hot chicks, fresh from the sorority house pillow fight.

This thread is a massive pile of thinly veiled homophobic over exaggeration.

Hey, hey guess what.

In the grand scheme of things, none of this matters. It's same gender'd individuals running for a meaningless title - it's freaking transient kitsch, not the bloody Cuban Missile Crisis. God.

Speaking of topics shoehorned into the Football Forum only to increase views.... HOW BOUT THAT WIN OVER UTA!!!2!

Nope. I don't even think there will be need for that long of a speech. How about 'Hey kid, how you gonna get laid with a 2-8 record? Lol, I'm kiddin, son. I know you aren't even thinking about considering that place. "

But, hey, who needs them, right?

Right. We are just going to have to wait for the new stadium. Can't compete on football quality with TV, TCU, SMU, and high school football as competitors. Can't compete on game experience while sitting on bird crap stained, hard seats with a poor sightlines. Even though tix are cheap we can't compete on price when the drive to Denton is perceived as taking a road trip. Also, its not like they make make out with a dude before you watch the game. That is a terrible reason. Sounds like he was looking for an excuse to get you off his case about buying season tickets already.

Yeah. Cuz we are the only school that doesn't allow gays n stuff. They can't even have clubs or nuthin.

Get a damn grip. This is not about "homophobia" Why do we have to have a "gay" homecoming court? If this passes, I will demand an all black homecoming court, and all white homecoming court, and all Latino homecoming court, and all Asian homecoming court, an all greek homecoming court, and an all residence hall homecoming court. I mean after all, we have to have EQUAL opportunity, right?
