Mean Green Try For 1,000th Win In Season Opener Against Cameron

DENTON, Texas (11/13/09) - It's been 92 years in the making, but the North Texas men's basketball program is now on the cusp of its 1,000th win. With 999 victories in the bank, the Mean Green takes on Cameron in Friday night's season opener. Tipoff is set for 7 pm at the Super Pit.

North Texas was picked to win the Sun Belt West Division in every preseason publication, as well as the Sun Belt Coaches Poll, and enters the year having won at least 20 games in each of the last three years.

Cameron and NT are meeting for the fourth consecutive season opener, and the Mean Green own a 37 point margin of victory in that span. North Texas took last year's meeting, 87-66, in front of a boisterous crowd at its former home the Snake Pit.

Eric Tramiel was named to the first-team and Josh White earned second-team honors on the Preseason All-Sun Belt squads. Tramiel led NT in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage, while White ranked second in the NCAA in free throw percentage.

So much for my countdown thread last year, eh? :)

The NCAA and NT differ on the total number of wins in program history. I was using the NCAA's info, and NT posted something different(992) acouple of days ago. I emailed the two Steve's, did some research, and apparently the NCAA has us beinning playing basketball 1 season before "we" started counting it(We allegedly went 3-0 that season). There was also a tie(in the early years I guess they didn't play OT) counted as a win by the NCAA one season.

I might have to dig up a Yucca someday from the missing year and see what the deal is.

However, after recounting the results they did have on hand against those that I got from the NCAA, they realized they had counted wrong and instead of 992 there were 999 wins(again not counting the mysterious first season of basketball) - so that is officially what NT is using for now.
