Brett Vito: Mean Green Starting To Fall Off The Map

I do hate to admit it, but there really isn't much to argue with in that piece from Brett Vito. It is not a negative piece like some of his in the past that seemed so much to be about his personal like and/or dislike of T Dodge...it is a rational and sane piece regarding the spot UNT finds itself in owing to the rise of both SMU and TCU's football fortunes. The crowd size, while reportedly larger than the week before against WKY, said a lot about what Brett is saying. When the school's own student body (far and away the largest in the metroplex) and many of the season ticket holders could not find their way to Fouts on a wonderfully beautiful fall afternoon to support THEIR school against UL-Monroe, well, pretty much supports Brett's position.

I hope the stands fill for the Army game. If you cannot bring yourself to come in support of the Mean Green, well, come and support the young men and women of the US Military Academy at West Point.

Hopefully, wearing green (A Tank Army T-Shirt perhaps...yes!!!) and cheering for a Mean Green victory. If for no other reason than to support the team members who work VERY hard to do the best they can...I'll be there with the bride and we are bringing a friend to his first Mean Green home game. Hope to see you there as a part of a FULL Fouts field to support the Mean Green seniors in their last home game and to support the full Mean Green squad and in support of the fine young men and women who make up the Corps of Cadet at West Point.

GO MEAN GREEN...TANK ARMY!!!!

In other news, it appears that we will all still need oxygen to breathe. Seriously, How hard is it to really write an article like this? Yes, it is extremely accurate, but this same article could have been written at just about anytime over the last 30 years. Even in the SBC championship days, we got a little more attention from the local media, but it was ALWAYS behind TCU and SMU, even when we had better records than SMU. The Metroplex fanbase doesn't even support TCU as well as they should and they play in a really good conference and have reached #4 in the BCS. The real deal here is that if you are not in the Big XII, the fans really don't care here in the DFW area. If you are not from the old SWC, the media really doesn't care, either.

Here is the hope and this is what I would write an article about. UNT is building a new stadium that will be ready in 2011. The facility will match up perfectly with the other great facilities in the Athletic Center. The funding for the program will get a needed infusion from student fees and probably from corporate sponsorships and suite purchases/rentals. This will be an attractive job for someone.

Yep, that's probably exactly what RV was thinking as he sat alone at the south end of the teams bench with his hands behind his head. The fireworks long over, the few fans that were there now gone and the band playing " you'll never walk alone" as his wife joined him on the bench.

The program and once hopeful season sinking to the bottom of the ocean with the haunting question in front of him..........what to do about Todd Dodge?

I think he knows what he has to do, but he doesnt think he can? We can all say what we think, but do we really have the money to start over again? Dodge is a realist, he has to be. I dont think his release would be a total shock to him. Yes we would probably lose Riley in the deal, but the time for that may be no better than now? You have two young QB's to build the system around, who havent been in the SLC "spread" for five years. I know RV is as frustrated as we are. He's a winner, and wants us to move up. In my opinion the TD experiment did accomplish some good things. Donations are up, interst in the program was sky-rocketting, and attendance is steady. We simply arent getting any better at the one thing TD isnt good at... adjusting to Divison-I college football. My nephew is a senior OL at SLC, and loved TD. I think that is the Dodge lagacy we are stuck with in Denton. We got the uniforms, the colors, the coaches, and some of the greatest SLC fans... but missed out on the success? We took a chance on a high school coach and rolled the dice. Others have also tried it.. so we arent alone. You have to admire RV for the gutsy call. So, three years later are still right where we were. Bad football is bad football. RV fired Darrell Dickey for two bad years after four straight conference titles and four straight bowl appearances. No argument there... it was a gutsy call that needed to be made. I think the time has come for RV to make another gutsy call. No knee-jerk intended, it's just time.

Just my two cents...

We've had a lot of heated debates on this forum over coaching contract terms. Buyouts, extensions, proposed clauses, and the like.

I'd like to propose a mandatory clause in any future employment contract or other type of agreement for any North Texas Athletics Director. Any AD who hires a high school coach to be the head coach of one of our teams is terminated. Fired. Immediately.

They can make the hire, but it's their last act before security escorts them out the door.

What would have been their salary goes into an escrow account until one of two things happens: If the coach manages a winning season, they get the escrow money and they get their job back. If the replacement AD feels the need to fire the high school coach before the coach manages a winning season, then the hiring AD gets the 'William Wallace in Braveheart' treatment, right on the porch of the Athletics Department building. And the escrow money goes towards pitchforks, torches, and torturing tools, with whatever gets left over going into a facilities fund.

Whether it's 10 or 15 or 30 years from now, no matter what accolades the coach may have to recommend them... If you hire a high school coach here, you sacrifice your job until proven correct.

If someone thinks a third attempt is worth the risk, they'd better be willing to take the consequences of failure.
