While I don't think we need to get rid of DeLoach, I think it's pretty hilarious that no matter how atrocious the defense gets, he will always be given the benefit of the doubt. The current years at our alma mater count just as much as his previous years. Right now, grading out his career, he objectively can't be very highly regarded. His defense just gave up nearly half a hundred to the worst team in the country. I think the "no excuses" crew from a few years ago might have to go and make a "unless you're Gary DeLoach" amendment. The guy isn't getting it done right now.

Curious question - did you think the cupboard was bare when Dodge got here? If so, then multiply that by 10 - because that is what happens when your coaching staff has little clue (which they admit to) when they recruited offensive talent their first 1-2 years, yet alone defensive talent. You can put Michael Andretti in a volkswagon bug at the Indy 500 and he is not going to win.

If people are so willing to give Dodge 4 years, why the anger at DeLoach after just 1 1/2?

I'm not angry at DeLoach at all. I think he needs more time. I think Dodge does too. But many here on this board have been angry at Dodge since Day 1. And they were angry at Mendoza in year one, and at least he had the excuse of being a high school coach in over his head. But very few, if any, of those same people are angry at DeLoach. Or will be. Ever. He's just as responsible for this awful defense as he was for the few years of good ones he had in the 00s. I just ask for consistency. People should be calling for DeLoach's head and saying "no excuses."

And this isn't the Indy 500. That was Western Kentucky putting up almost 50 points. That's Troy, Ohio, Ball State, ULL, etc. That's more like the local weekend warrior track.

For me it is pretty simple - DeLoach has PROVEN he knows what he is doing on this level. Probably will take him a little longer this time than the last time he was here due to the lack of talent and HIS choice of coaches.

Ahh, so you'll support him no matter how bad the defense is because he has PROVEN in the past he can be successful? Gotcha. Defenses results of 2009 don't matter. Continue to ride on the sweet memories of 2002-2003.

This board needs an enema.

Are you sure? There's more than enough diarrhea of the mouth here on this board.

Wouldn't you say Dodge proved he could produce at this level based upon his past performance at NT as the passing game coordinator and Mitch Maher's production?

I do have a question regarding Deloach when he was on DD's staff. Did Deloach get to pick his defensive staff? Did Deloach come on board when DD was hired or did DD bring him in later? Did Deloach roam the sideline when he was DD's defensive coordinator or was he in the pressbox?

...Is losing 3 games by less than 4 points even relevant? This board is just full of crazy statements.

It's really not relevant, amirite? We couldn't pull off the win, again, and again. It's TD bag of balls to juggle and he keeps dropping the ball. Really.

If you make a statement that the team doesn't look prepared, I'd say it's relevant. You're right tho, it is a trend... not trying to defend that.

There you go using logic again!

To be fair... If I were the AD at a 1-AA school and Dodge was my QB/RB coach, I'd be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt based on his two years of experience and positive results.

To answer your questions- DeLoach came on board with Dickey back in 1998 as the DB coach, promoted to DC in 2000. Not sure whether he picked his own staff. As I recall, he was a sideline guy and had someone else working in the box to handle the spotting and observation that has been pointed out in this thread as being so critical to defensive planning and reaction. He wasn't up there, he had someone else up there communicating any relevant information to him.

Maybe, we ought to be looking for the guy who manned the pressbox and sent the information down to the field.

I think that was Kenny Evans, at least until Evans got promoted to DC and confused the hell out of every broadcast camera team that got him mixed up with Dickey.

It tells me that he may be a good coordinator, but as the head coach at 5-26 I am not convinced he that head coach is his best place at this level. The answer to your second question was yes DeLoach was able to choose the defensive coaches and as stated above he was on the sidelines. Why would Dodge want DeLoach upstairs if he wants to be and does his best on the sidelines?

99,

How do you know Dodge put Deloach upstairs, or at least made him go up there? Have you thought that might have been Deloach's choice? Maybe with the addition of Mike Nelson and his experience at the college level, Coach Deloach feels the sideline is in good hands. By the way, I think the majority of Div 1 head coaches have the final say as to who is own the staff, not the coordinators. Muschamp at Texas is an example. Akina (former co-defensive coordinator) was demoted when he came in, not fired. As for Deloach and recruiting, did he find Kennedy, Cassell, and Spencer. Maybe not, but he did a good job of coaching them. My understanding is that he does not go on the road and recruit which I do not like. By the way, Deloach does not want to be a head coach. Whatever, a team cannot have co-head coaches and that seems to be what some folks want to happen here.

It really does not make any difference where Dodge, Deloach, or any others are, the defense has got to take it up on themselves to execute. They should not have to have a coach come down from the press box to motivate them. But then we get into the discussion of preparation during the week, etc. and a whole bunch of arguments. W-I-N-N-I-N-G is the cure all.

The defensive play on the field during a game is not the result of where the coordinator is positioned, but a result of how well they are prepared during the week.

I have no idea who put DeLoach upstairs, nor do I really care. In fact I don't really care if he is on the sidelines or upstairs at this point. I think he brings something to the sidelines, but I am not a coach and never been one either so know very little about it. Since Muschamp has been named the successor to Brown, you would hope that he would get a good amount of say on who coaches with him on that side of the ball and if I remember correctly he is on the sidelines.

I am looking forward to seeing the progress though from here on out into the remaining portion of this year and the next two.

Yes, Muschamp is definitely on the sideline.
