Canada might not like that.

Well, when it first started we were basically the only country that played baseball, so the name was valid. And once tradition takes hold, it's a powerful thing.

Look at it, among the 4 major USA por leagues, all refer to themselves as "world champion" except for the NHL.

And, until they all start allowing team champions from other nations to qualify and participate NONE of them are WORLD CHAMPIONS OF ANYTHING! Think how exciting it would be to have the Lakers play a real world tournament, or the Yankees/Phillies winner, etc. THAT would be great and a TRUE World Champion would emerge. Not like the all-star world baseball and basketball things...but, the pro teams. Could be great sport.

But the World Cup doesn't even do that Kram. I don't see Manchester U in it, do you?

Besides, the Lakers were the best team in the World last year. I don't think any foreign team could take 4 out of 7 from them, do you? Even our Olympic team with all its stars couldn't(because they have a few weeks to train together vs playing with each other for about 8 months).

No, but there is a Champions League in soccer where all the top teams play against each other for a championship...much better than the MLB, NBA, etc. "world" claim. As to the Lakers...you are probably right, but we'll never know will we? They wouldn't dare take the chance now would they..."World" champs my rear end! I give you the U.S. Champs...and a darn good team at that...no argument from me, but call it what it is.

'Merica is the only REAL country.

Stop emboldening the terrorists by questioning the legitimacy of our major sporting leagues.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited about this new initiative banning all the foreigners from MLB rosters KRAM seems to have hit on.

Now, if we could maybe scrap the wild card and get a Cuban team and a Japanese team in their spots, I'd really enjoy the postseason a lot more. I've always been a big fan of the Nippon Ham Fighters even since their last title, even though I grew up so far away from there. I just love their stadium and fans.

Point of fact the NBA would like to expand beyond the USA. I doubt the players would like to traverse the world for weeks at a world, so I doubt the Union ever allows say - a team in Sydney to be included.

Besides...the so called Champions league is basically what the NBA is. Most of the best players play in it from other countries. Why do American guys who can't even make the Association become stars in Greece and Spain, etc?

Not exactly...correct me if I'm wrong on this, KRAM, but the Champions league is made up of teams that won (or finished close to the top of) their European leagues. The top 1-3 teams from each of the top Euro leagues (Spanish, French, German, English, Italian, Portugese, Czech, etc.) are pulled in every year to play in the Champions league. But even the Champions league champion can't call themselves world champs because they leave out leagues outside of Europe. However, its a facinating sporting event that I don't think can be duplicated by the other sports right now because there are no other rival leagues on par with the NBA, NFL, and NHL.

But I do agree with KRAM's arguement: "world champions" is a bit of a stretch.

The European Soccer Leagues are of comperable strength to each other tho - that's the difference. No pro basketball league is comperable to the NBA. And I'm not dogging them at all. Spain in particular has some ballers, but it's certainly not comperable in any form.

We? No, we are not French. We're American, because you're in America, okay? Greatest country on the planet

You are 100% correct about the greatest country on the planet...but, how, may I ask, does that have anything to do with the point my post? Part of being "great" is not having to tell folks that you are...they just know it! Like all the crap that takes place after a simple tackle in the NFL or a TD....they act like they are the first to every accomplish that wonderful feat. Come on...if you are so great, act like it...act like you have done it before. The truly "great" ones, have no need to tell folks of their "greatness" time and time again...I'll excuse Ali for all that because it was part of his "act"...Ali, actually is "the Greatest"...but that's another thread for another day!

What does that do? Does that blow your mind? That just happened!

I still like Yankees in 6.

Mariano Rivera is just amazing.

I'm...rooting for the Yankees too - but only if they close out tomorrow. Take that, cock-bag boss who traveled back home to see them lose twice this weekend!

I'm trying hard to care, but now that its basically over, I really don't anymore. Whee, the Yankees win... again.

...they have been to 44 World Series. It's sorta hard to get excited about something that turns out the same virtually every year.
