Amazing...but, then again, it is "Change", so it has to be great, right?

Man, I'm glad it's Friday so I can focus on college football over the weekend. Maybe that will distract all the media "darlings" from gushing over Mr. O's latest grand achievement...while, of course, he goes about "saving" so many US jobs, reforming health care, deciding whether or not to pull the rug out from under the military efforts in Afghanistan, socializing more US industries, paying off his Union backers with more restrictive tariffs, sitting idle while the dollar sinks ever lower and lower due to his ever increasing federal debt and deficit, etc., etc. I'm just giddy all over with all this "change" taking place.

If it makes you feel any better, it's distinctly possible that he'll give the award to Jack Lemmon.

The work Lemmon did in Grumpy Old Men (and continued in Grumpier Old Men) showed the world through parable and art the futility of long running conflict, and was (in the opinion of many political analysts) the driving force behind the 1993 Peace Accords.

It'll all work out in the end.

I just think it's repulsive that Obama gets the award, when so many more qualified white Americans are still unemployed, and could desperately use the accompanying cash prize to buy health care that will murder the elderly relatives of poor people.

The award itself doesn't really mean much, no matter who wins it, beyond symbolism. Obviously the panel thought it symbolized a "screw you" to the Bush regime since Obama has been trying to mend fences.

The Nobel Prize was created as a means of alleviating disgrace and international shame/remorse for previous acts.

According to the logic you mention, this is perhaps the most appropriate and relevant choice in the history of the award.

Obama has a chance of doing some good things such as reducing the number of nuclear weapons and he as already made good progress on that front. But this is incredibly premature and I think that CMJ makes a good point, this is a slap to the Bush administration which was not looked upon favorably in many place across the world. I found two things that were really interesting to me in the article,

The award appeared to be a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, who won the prize in 1984, said Obama's award shows great things are expected from him in coming years.

I didn't think that you got this award for having promise, that would be like awarding the New England Patriots the Lombardy Trophy in 2007 just because they were the consensus pick for Super Bowl Champs that year.

Also I don't feel any safer when I travel abroad now than I did two years ago or four or 10. That's not really an issue that I have experienced, personally I think that s a random talking point that doesn't really hold water unless you are traveling to someplace you shouldn't be in the first place, and those places are still dangerous now even though Obama is in charge. Disapproving talk about our government or country from people as I travel to their country is not particularly threatening nor dangerous 99% of the time. I might take issue with them on their opinions and in truth they are pretty informed about what happens over here but they do not have the basis of knowledge that comes form living here and seeing it first hand. I enjoy having these conversations over a beer in a pub, or a campfire on the side of a mountain because I learn things about their countries and other social structures that I never would have known or in many cases even thought about. It is fascinating, educational and helps me to develop a better world view than I would have otherwise.

I was in Nairobi Kenya in the first part of January 2008 when they were going through the election crisis and marshal law had broken out, that was dangerous and I did not feel safe there, but that had nothing to do with our sitting President at the time or anything else over here. We are not that important.

None of those acts or philosophies suggests conservatism. There are varying definitions of "liberal" and "conservative"; but when referring to these terms politically, it can pretty much be boiled down to one's view of law and use of government. Conservatives basically believe in a strict interpretation of law based upon its original intent, while liberals believe in a looser interpretation to suit what they perceive as changing times and changing needs. Conservatives generally believe in a much narrower role for government than do liberals.
