I don't paint anybody. You were the one engaging in all the generalizations. Since you didn't provide any factual basis for any of it, I was just inviting you to expand on your claim to "lots of experience with the disadvantaged".

And yes, I do resent the generalizations; I was the youngest of 7 children abandoned by my father and raised by my saint of a mother. Yes, we were the recipients of government programs, AFDC ("welfare" to the amen corner here, I'm sure), commodities (we went through all this before foot stamps). I don't think there was any housing assistance then; I don't think the place we lived until I was 7 with no indoor plumbing would satisfy any minimum requirements for any subsidies that do exist now. Yeah, we made it out of welfare and into gainful, tax paying employment; me and my able bodied brothers all served in the military. I was thus able to finish college using the GI Bill benefits that I EARNED; yep grateful for that government program. I was just interested in reading about the "lots" of background you have in these matters.

Hooray for you. A great story. I think you being who you are today has a lot more to do with your mother than it does with any federal program. And your mother used those programs for what they were intended, a temporary stop gap until you can get back on your feet. Unfortunately many are not like you and your family, and it's not entirely their fault.

I've seen generations of many families that never leave the government teet because that's all they have known and all they ever will know, and, sadly, don't have the ability to break the cycle. I've seen programs that promote single parenthood by paying a single mother to stay single and keep the father out of the house. I've had 19 year old girls tell me they were going to have their third kid so they could get a bump in pay from the "welfare department". There was not an incentive for them to do anything else.

And I don't consider the GI bill a social program. You did something to earn that, right? Completely different than a hand out.

Like I have said about many subjects, there are exceptions to every rule, but, unfortunately, they are far fewer on this subject.

If a (reliable) poll was taken, I think you'd be surprised to see how many liberals agree with you that welfare programs should be a "temporary stop gap". Moderate liberals like myself get upset when there is talk from conservatives of doing away completely with welfare instead of putting effort into fixing it.

I generally use one of those backpack spray guns when I'm painting the poor.

It keeps them too far away to possibly touch me, and helps me avoid any unpleasant smells they may be carrying with them.

I prefer to remodel their houses and buy them taco beds.

CEO salaries are not really related to the profit margin, other than the fact that payrolls are part of the expenses of the company. CEOs can make millions and the company's margin can still be nothing.

Maybe margin on the individual product level, but a CEO that is making millions of dollars can be the difference between making money and losing it. Payroll is almost always the most significant part of overhead costs a company can see and if a CEO is a large part of that, then that does affect the overall profitability of the company. I am not saying that a CEO can't be worth the money, but their salary does contribute to the bottom line.

Why is the amount of money that a CEO makes more important today than let's say 3, 5, 10 or 30 years ago? It is only at the forefront because of the socialist tendancies of our "redistribution of wealth" president. ----CLASS STRUGGLE---- The evils of the haves over the have nots. Where do you think that BHO, et.al., got these ideas? Hummmm.....Ayers, Alyinski & community activistism. If an insurance company wants to pay its executives a few million dollars a year to oversee billions and possibly trillions of dollars that is fine with me. That is free market capitalism. The very last thing American's want is for these execs to make as much as donut shop manager regulated by the federal government. You are either for capitalism or socialism.....there is no GREY AREA. Grey areas are for those who have been nutered. Thanks to our educational system students can now hide in grey without feeling ostrasized.

eulessismore has a great story of pulling himself out of hardship. The only thing missing was reading by candlelight in a log cabin. Seriously, some individuals have the fortitude to overcome these obsticals but the majority would rather take advantage of this, so called, "free money" from the federal government in welfare payments. '90 is right in some of his previous posts concerning welfare reciepients. Add to that mix illegals and not only does the United States have the WEALTHIST POOR in the world but also the WEALTHIST illegal aliens living in America. Why should our poor work when they can buy a house (because of the so called discrimination of the poor/bad credit of these people), buy a car, get food stamps, get more money for having more kids, get into Section 8 housing, have the county pay for their utilities and the list goes on. These freebies "never" stop for the poor. The government has taken the incentive away from the majority of Americans, on welfare, not to work and provide for their maslovian needs generation after generation. The socialist democrats generated this block of voters under LBJ's Great Society under the auspacies of the Civil Right's Act and have held on to them ever since for obvious reasons. Look at illegals who just walk into the hospital, have a baby, go to the U.S. Social Security Office and start receiving up to $2,500 per month in SS payments. Got a friend at a bank who cashes these checks when these folks present the SS check along with their Mexican Consulate I.D. Card. How many of these checks are being cashed monthly across the United States? Now the U.S. Homeland Security Head filed suit on the Maricopa (AZ) County Sheriff, in Phoenix, that he can not profile illegals and arrest them or hold them for detention anymore.

Do I really care if some people choose a lifstyle living off the government tit? heck no. What I really care about is how much they really make doing it as provided by Congress. Personally the money should be drastically cut and make it uncomfortable for these people to live these types of lifestyles on our tax dollars.

edit: Got a good friend who received a degree in Business .... attended NT and has M.S. and on SS and litterally can not work because of his current debilitating condition over the last seven or eight years. His SS check is a little less than $1,000 per month and is not eligible for food stamps or other assistance because of some technicality. Illegals who are here for, literally, months or days get more than my friend who has worked for over 35 years (or so) & who turns 60 next month. What is wrong with this picture???

I think CEO pay has been a topic of discussion over the past few years, not just in the 9 months since Obama was sworn into office. I think the reason that it's such a hot topic now is people are looking at all the companies that are failing, then seeing what the top execs at those companies are making. I think more people are getting fed up by the growning gap between what top execs and "line" employees get. I forget the exact statistic, but if you compare CEO salaries versus the average employee, the CEO's are making way more compared to the average employee when compared to say 20-50 years ago. With that said, I am not necessarily for a cap on CEO salaries, at least not a government imposed cap. I really do think that the Compensation Committees for most Board of Directors have really not lived up to their duty of making sure compensation is inline with Company performance. I predict there will be alot of changes in this regard due to shareholder suits or other actions.

So, since Pres. Obama is CEO of the US, and he just got a bonus of 1.4 million for doing nothing (Nobel Peace Prize Award), will we see him voluntarily give this to the US Government to help pay down the debt?

I think not.

No they don't. My insurance company (blue cross) sent me some information about taking out "extended care" insurance, which would be separate from my regular policy. Kind of like buying a home and assuming that your homeowners policy automatically covers floods.........it doesn't.

Medicare (and I guess regular insurance companies) will cover someone who is in a nursing facility getting physical therapy. But that is a separate wing from the "regular" nursing home general care population. You are allowed only so many days in that physical therapy wing.

Medicare will only cover someone in the "general care" population if they don't have any assets (or very little assets). Otherwise you are denied coverage for general care in a nursing home.

So out of 6.9 million people, there has to be a pretty significant number of people who have applied to medicare to cover general nursing home care only to find out that they have too many assests....and are therefore denied.

Ok, I see where you're going with this. But then woudn't the confustion that regular insurance doesn't cover such a service be universial - I.E. people with BCBS applying for nursing coverage to be denied and told that is a different type of insurance. I have BCBS and had no clue that extended care isn't covered. I would have applied and been denied and then had to seek care through another avenue. Why would medicare be feilding or denying this type of claim at a larger rate than any other company?

No...I personally don't give a damn enough to do the leg-work required to breakdown such a bulky statistic that was clearly presented in such a way as to elicit the ire of people whose minds have already been made up.

My comment was borne out of the fact that this is just another tired example of the same template discussion under the guise of "political discourse" that goes on over here. Someone, typically FFR or EE, gets a subscription email or reads their favorite blog...turns around and posts the information as the gospel (without actually conducting any of their own research...which since this topic seems to be of such great importance to them, you'd think they would...but since these kinds of articles are handcrafted to fit in with their previously held opinions, why would one question their methods)...then the same 10 or so folks hop on here in a circle-jerk of support...untbowler puts his little sick green face guy above his post, KRAM1 uses a bunch of exclimation points and you string together 12 capital letters in a row that apparently means something to every 12 year old girl on instant messanger but that I have to go and look up everytime in order to have some semblance of the point you're trying to convey...and everyone walks a way feeling smarter without having actually learned anything.

Thanks for proving my point, 'cause you did it so much better than I could. This story didn't come out via a form e-mail, it has been in the news since Tuesday, and all over the internet. You don't care to do your own research, yet you attack people with a differing view as simply falling in line with some talking points and not doing their own research? Really? ...and then you finish up by further attacking the folks you apparently disagree with? You attack the messenger, which is exactly the argument I presented in my first post.

If the postings in this forum cause you such greif, why don't you just stay out of this particular forum? If you want to debate the information being presented, I think we all welcome it, and would love to have a debate about something that is so important as this issue, but just throwing out the smart-ass comment and attacking those who you don't agree with is just dumb. Why waste your time?

You call this a small margin??????????????????????

http://www.healthreformwatch.com/2009/05/2...sation-in-2008/

The total income you show here represents 100Million or so... that's a DROP IN THE BUCKET of the money in health insurance. The profit margin in the health insurance IS very small. ...they make a lot of DOLLARS in profit as a result of volume, but the actual profit margin is very small.

It's my assumption that they field and deny this claim at larger rates because in many cases they do pay for it.....as long as you are essentially indigent. Until recently, private insurers didn't cover stays in a nursing home (unless there was specialized medical care being given), so there was no application for them to deny. Now you can get a supplimental policy to cover it.

Just doing an ocular pat-down. I kinda see myself as the sherriff of this part of the board.

Unless you are very rich or have insurance, you are in real trouble today. I just finished having a stem cell transplant evaluation. Fortunately, the tests show I have to be monitored, but, at least, I do not have to have a transplant. I don't know what the total costs will be, but they already well exceed $20,000. On top of that I will have continued monitoring for the rest of my life. How can someone do this without insurance? We have a number of people on staff and in plant who are hard working good people. Our school pays the premium for the employee but not the family. Many of these people cannot afford to pay for their family. What happens if disaster hits them? What as a society do we do? What do the people who time and again say this is a Christian nation do?

OK you are proving my point!!!!! Take out the CEO's and share holders and upper management....Wow more people are covered.

(revenue - expenses)

---------------------------- = margin

revenue

Again, point is made! What do insurance companies do? What do they produce? Paperwork? Derivatives? Advertising? Lobby? Not much else....Proved my point again...

Yes he is giving it to charity!!!! You were saying what....Oh yea, I think so.....

It is so simple people....Why do you not get it?????? Let doctors do their job! Let people get treatment for what ails them! That is healthcare !!! We don't need all the other paperwork!
