I found the little note in the Dallas Morning News today both interesting and telling....It said SMU was about 1000 tickets shy of a sellout for its first home game against SFA. WOW, if SMU can do it, i think UNT should be able to fill Fouts for EVERY home game. It will be interesting to see the "mix" in the SMU turnout...students vs townies, etc. Also will be interesting to see if the folks actually come to the game...sellout or no...they need the folks to show up to make a good 1st game impression.

Hey, sounds a bit like UNT, right? We need folks...students included, to show up for the games...UNT needs rears in the seats....let's fill Fouts!!!! BTW...that family deal for the game is really a good deal if you have kids and want to see some "live" college football. Just saying...it's a lot less expensive than a dinner out and a babysitter...come on, great family "date".

On a similar note, watch the Ball State coaches press conference where he states that (paraphrasing) it's one of the "jobs of the student newspaper to get students into the stadium for BSU football games". It sounded like their coach meets with the newspaper folks to make sure they understand their job in getting butts in the seats.

Boy, how radical would that be at UNT!!! Getting the student newspaper behind anything athletics.

Radical indeed. I think TD/RV have spoken with the UNT paper. Never ceases to amaze me how folks associated with UNT and the Denton area do not see the benefits to all in getting behind this program. Big "excuse" and excuse is exactly what it is, is often that the town's business folks "can't play favorites" of UNT over TWU...so, result is...they do nothing. In talking with several TWU folks...both athletic related and academic...they have absolutely no problem at all if businesses want to support UNT athletics. For some odd reason, they seem to realize that what is good for TWU and UNT is good for Denton and vice versa. Amazing concept, isn't it?

No offense, but as an alum who has a number of friends who studued journalism at UNT, I don't think they are / were that concerned with wearing pom-poms for the football team or any other athletic program. That department does a great job at getting the kids who write for the publication ready for their future. While I was on campus I did like how they consistently produced decent work. Is it the DMN or Star-telegram? No. But the fact they weren't acting like cheerleaders was also a good thing. I know many of you want everyone in every media capacity to go out of their way to prop up the Mean Green, but there are more important things to cover from a journalistic stance.

You can say what you will about business owners, but don't go blindy attacking the paper.

I think the issues with them stem more from the editorial staff coming out against the athletic fee, then, after the students voted for the athletic fee, giving publicity to an idiotic attempt to call a new election, and then giving 100 editorials to a non-student who railed against the stadium and the student government.

At least those are my issues.

I do wish they had a better sports section, but they are a student paper, afterall.

I always liked the way the daily covered most things during my tenure there. I don't really like the extra coverage of the editorials written by the dude from auburn that didn't like our stadium, but I would be interested to see how many other well written pieces came in touting the other side while that was going on.... Not trying to support that guy or his opinions but the NT Daily has consistently been a good if not great paper. Apologies if they have not always been cheerleaders for the athletics dept, but there is only so much you can ask. We are not OU therefore our paper is not beholden to the $$$$$$$$ coming from the football program. UNT has constantly produced some of the best journalists / broadcasters in the modern media, there has to be a reason for our success. It sucks that they are not apologists for our teams and it sucks more that they don't support them during the hard times like you would expect a good school paper to do. Don't worry about that, when winning starts again the paper will come around, they did, at least a bit during my tenure, during the Dickey years and they will again. Don't forget the radio coverage and true green homer-ship that the Green Guys used to display.... We have pride here fellas, don't despair....

The Daily is a good paper and it is not a handle of the athletic department, good for them. I would love to see more favorable coverage towards the football team, lets earn it first before we get frustrated though OK?

June Jones was on Good Day on Fox 4 this morning guaranteeing a bowl bid by the end of next year. Tim was on his knees for Jones. Could Tim be a SMU sympathizer?

What was the backing on the guarantee?

Will he quit? Will he refund his salary?

Unless the guarantee actually had some sort of backing, like the girl who promised to pay back her scholarship money in the Women's NCAA Tournament (can't remember who it was)... I'd have to say that June Jones' guarantee doesn't grade out very well.

Tim never asked that question, so, obviously, Jones didn't have to provide an answer. It was pretty good publicity for SMU. The camera shot was of Jones in the foreground with the interior of the stadium in the background. Jones also said that the home opener would be a sell out, with many fans sitting on the berm behind the endzone. It really was a puff piece, but it was Good Day, after all.

They also talked about how Jones was out recruiting major schools for talent, in this year's class and in next's.

This one week after the snide comment made by Tim about UNT and the stupid tailgating beer cans. Funny, he said UNT fans were upset about the beer can thing, but not one thing had been posted on here about them (surely we never over-react, right?), then made the " They've lost ten in a row, why are they griping" comment.

Tim = the new Brett Vito

In my opinion, the "Daily", preparing students for careers or not, could do a better job in supporting the university's athletic department. Why would such stories/reviews/articles with a more positive slant, not be good ways to teach? Do you have to be negative for it to be "good teaching"? Just wondering. Not asking for a bias, just some stories or reviews indicating that attending games is a great part of the UNT experience and that if you hadn't tried it in awhile...well, maybe you should. Very inexpensive date...and the tailgating is great too. Student in the crowd type of article perhaps. Oh, well, maybe one must be negative to be in the "media" business these days...

Just saying...the "School Paper" is part of the school, right? I just see no harm in the paper trying to help the athletic dept. fill the stadium...much like student papers from the other universities I have attended. But, again, my attendance was a few year ago, so perhaps today that just isn't "cool" and like the national media you have to do "Watergate" type stories and "in depth" deep and serious stuff all the time. Could be.....seems odd.

couldn't you say that every dept has something more important to do than rah rah for athletics? The business dept does an excellent job of getting kids ready for the corporate world, I hope they don't quit supporting other aspects of the university.

It's the school newspaper. It should support all things North Texas.

Nobody expect cheerleaders. What I think irks most, I know it does me, is that they go sooooooo far in the other direction to seem unbiased and cutting edge. Prime example, when we were losing games almost weekly from my freshman to junior years the results of the previous Saturday's games were on the front page. When we started to win conference championships each weeks results were on the back page or close to it. And don't get anyone started on the editorial board...apparently railing against athletics is the only way to seem like you aren't playing favorites.
