What interests me the most about this story isn't the crime itself. It's the social commentary that goes along with it.

When the suspects were not yet identified this story was mentioned on the Ticket. It was stated by one of the on air personalities that the culprits were probably black because "I hear rappers talking about Bentleys all the time."

Then, when it turned out that the bad guys were in fact black..and the victims white...a whole bevy of garbage came spewing forth on comments sections in every online paper I have found. Real intellectual gold like:

What were these guys doing driving a Bentley? They must have been drug dealers.

The "victims" probably yelled racial epithets at them.

Blacks are more criminally predisposed.

The bad guys should be hung (I have to wonder if the historical significance of this comment was realized when it was said).

Since this board has been good for nothing more than divisive "banter" anyway I thought I'd throw out a softball for everyone to take a swing at. Hell, this one's a big enough powder keg that if we'll all take our political-correctness filters off we can get the whole board shut down for a week or so.

They sound like model citizens:

Eddye Lovely was convicted in 1985 for possession of marijuana, and in 1995 he received one year's probation and a $350 fine for driving while intoxicated. He was also convicted in 1997 of theft and resisting arrest.
His son pleaded guilty to credit/debit card abuse, a state felony, in April and received five years' probation.

The racial portion of this is irrlevant to me.

Did they commit a crime? If yes, go to jail. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Easy softball.

Well, no one knows what happened, because no one was there. Obviously the police believe a crime was committed because they made an arrest.

Don't really understand the point of this.

The point is that though little/no factual information is really known about this incident there is a virtual circus of opinion/commentary swirling around it. Simply taking a moment to read the "comments" section on this story gives one a disturbing glimpse into the way people's minds work...on both sides of the "racial divide."
