Fau Stadium Will Not Open On Schedule

Jul. 23--BOCA RATON -- A much anticipated 30,000-seat Florida Atlantic University stadium won't open by the August 2010 target date because of snags in finances, officials said.

The university has had trouble finding corporate sponsors for the stadium, estimated in 2007 to cost about $64 million. The price tag is likely higher now, although FAU officials don't have new figures.

The university, which has been using Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for its home games, is considering several options, said FAU lawyer David Kian. One would be to open a scaled down version of the stadium in August, 2010, leaving room for future expansion. Or the entire stadium could open later, possibly in December 2010 or summer 2011, he said.
