No site yet for Battle of the Axe

Mayes said playing the games at North Texas' Fouts Field is also an option. SMU's Ford Field, site of the two-game Tom Landry Classic on Aug. 29, has restrictions that prevent it from hosting the Lewisville ISD games.

I think this would be a good opportunity, not only to showcase UNT to future students and student-athletes, but to be a part of a tradition while making a little bit of money in the process. It's too bad we don't already have the new stadium constructed or the decision may be a little easier for the LISD AD to make. However, this could be an opportunity to build on for the future.

I really think someone should be watching things like this and attracting area high-school rivalries to the new stadium. I think it is a good way to get a little cash and to show the new stadium off to possible recruits. Good stuff.

Yep, I like the idea of the game being played at Fouts as a forerunner to being played in the new stadium. More exposure and income for UNT and Denton itself gets some added revenue from the fans attending...food, beverage, gasoline, maybe an out of town granparent or two...or just friends...staying at the new hotel.

So, tell me again why the City of Denton does not seem to be behind the stadium project in any public way......:huh::angry::shocking:

I am announcing the game again this season, as much as I would LOVE to call a game at the new stadium....there would be something so cool about doing the game at my University. Denton is a 15-20 minute drive for both of those schools, that seem like it would be an easy choice.

I'm not privy to the exact numbers but word is UNT wants much more than what LISD would consider paying for hosting the game. Much more than what Texas Stadium cost for the previous years Battle of the Axe.

And why am I not surprised by that bit of information? According to the article, Texas Stadium only charged $500 for use of the stadium. The schools were allowed to keep the gate receipts, while Texas Stadium kept the earnings from parking and concessions. At 10K plus attendance, that sounds like a fair deal to me. In fact, considering how bad Fouts is, I'd be in favor of actually paying LISD $500 to play at Fouts.

Sometimes....no....many times, I just don't understand what the leadership at this University is trying to accomplish.

Ding, Ding, Ding!! We have a winner, or loser as the case with North Texas hosting a high profile regular season HS game.

Yes, NT can really afford to subsidize high school games. Being critical is great, but do you really think NT who has to bring in portable generations just to run the lights, can rent out Fouts for $500. I am confident that NT would love to have more high school games but they can't lose thousands of dollars a game to do so.

Yea too bad the Athletic Dept can't manage to do anything to promote this unversity and get things off the ground.

I remember playing there in HS for either the battle of the axe or a playoff game. Can't remember which. I remember we picked up police escorts half way through the bus ride up just to get there on time because traffic was so horrible. Think we were still late getting there.

Lewisville ISD rivalries headed for UNT

I don't know how I missed this announcement, but it looks like we'll be getting the "Battle of the Axe" and the "Mound Showdown" in Fouts Field after all!! Great job! It sounds like this is just the start of LISD continuing their rivalry games on the UNT campus, as the LISD AD was given the horse and pony show regarding our new facilities.

"Lewisville is kind of our extended community," UNT associate athletic director Brian Bethea said. "Having that opportunity to bring those people to our campus is huge, not only from an athletics standpoint but also a university standpoint." - I must say, it is reassuring to hear that, as I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.

This was an interesting quote:

Cowboys Stadium may be a premier sporting venue. But UNT officials are proud of what they're planning in Denton. The school is slated to open its own new 30,000-seat stadium by 2011, and Mayes said, "We got the whole show."

"Is [Fouts Field]as great a venue as what it will be in two years at North Texas? No," Mayes said. "They took us through the whole new facility. I didn't know it was going to be that state of the art."

Since we have to rent 20 generators for a game, I imagine our per game cost exceeds UT's.

Ah, the generator excuse again. If it's so expensive, who's the genius that decided we should rent them for each and every game rather than buy our own 30 years ago? How many night games have been played in the history of Fouts? Did anyone every bother to do a cost analysis on that? This is a tired excuse.

One more note...I go to a couple of UT games a year and they have generators too. I'm not sure exactly what they power, but they always have several of the big, professional grade generators just outside the stadium gates.

UT revenue $120M...UNT revenue $15M.

"They're in a situation where not only do they want us but the city of Denton wants us. So we're excited about going."

I'm old enough to remember when Lewisville's biggest rival was Denton High School. The DRC even sponsored a big traveling trophy for the "Denton County Championship". This was the early 80's and Denton and Lewisville were the only 5A progams in the county. My how times have changed.

What are the chances of NT getting the Ryan vs. Guyer game, the Ryan vs. Denton game and the Guyer vs. Denton game?

Somewhere between slim and none

DISD has the Collins Complex. It's one of the top high school facilities in the state

I think UNT's biggest mistake was not coordinating with Denton ISD on a single facility. The $21 million that DISD poured into C.H. Collins would have been nice to have been added to the new UNT stadium fund. DISD could have taken a small chuck of that $21 million and expanded the Denton High stadium as a secondary stadium when the new UNT field was occupied.

It's a mistake for UNT like I made a mistake not coordinating with Salma Hayek to go to my prom with me. You can't coordinate with another party that isn't interested.

If I recall correctly, this sort of cooperative effort was thoroughly pursued and DISD was not willing.
