Latinos are putting conservatives “on notice” and will watch Republicans “like hawks.” Estuardo V. Rodriguez, director of something called “Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary,” told ABC News: “We accept tough questions. But what we are going to object to are questions that misrepresent the judge or that distort her record.” (The group includes the pro-racial/ethnic preference Hispanic National Bar Association, U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.)
In getting ready for the battle the left is now going after FF Frank Ricci.

WASHINGTON — Supporters of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor are quietly targeting the Connecticut firefighter who's at the center of Sotomayor's most controversial ruling...."The whole business of getting Supreme Court nominees through the process has become bloodsport," said Gary Rose, a government and politics professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn.

On Friday, citing in an e-mail "Frank Ricci's troubled and litigious work history," the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way drew reporters' attention to Ricci's past. Other advocates for Sotomayor have discreetly urged journalists to pursue similar story lines.

Sotomayor and International Law

In a speech to the American Civil Liberties Union of Puerto Rico in April, Judge Sotomayor explained that "ideas have no boundaries," and that "international law and foreign law will be very important in the discussion of how to think about the unsettled issues in our own legal system." To discourage the use of foreign or international law, she added, would "be asking American judges to close their minds to good ideas."

That's political quicksand for a judge Democrats are eager to portray as a moderate inclined to narrow reading of text and precedent.

Rick, does it really matter what Sotomayor says, how she says it or if she uses "preference"(of some sort) vs. law to make / interpret law? No. The democrats are going to vote her in an we "all" know it. luckily she will still be in the minority on The Court.

Shouldn't suprise anyone that the groups you mentioned are threatening the republican party. They are far left organizations who threaten conservatives about everything. It's really not even news worthy.

She will get confirmed, and probably with many republican votes, as she should (assuming there are no bombshells about her in the hearings). Presidents get to pick Supreme Court Justices. Get over it. Would you advocate treating her like Clarence Thomas was treated?

Of course she is going to be confirmed, unless there is a major revalation about her past. That is what is supposed to happen. All of Bush's justices were questioned fiercely, some would say unfairly with the filibusters and such, but they ultimately made it in.

If the republicans did not bitch then something would be wrong... But she is going to be appointed.

Good post until this. Can't resist one cheer for the team.

You must not remember Robert Bork, one of the greatest legal minds of our time.

And Sotomayor allegedly had a hand in the treatment he received.

I guess it depends on what you call "activism". If by activism you mean having a justice vote to strike down laws(either federal or state) that are voted on by our representatives then Conservative justices are just as "activist" as Liberal judges.

She will "legislate" from the bench no more or less than any other justice. I really think she will be good. She has a good head on her shoulders, she has great experience as a judge and woman of color and I think the diversity is needed on the court. Good pick in my book.
