Really really really sucks... unless Gortat fails to ever live up to his expected potential.... then it's awesome.

Blessing in disguise?

http://www.dallasbasketball.com/fullColumn.php?id=1831

how about MLE-or-better deals in recent years to "hope he gets good" big men? Last year's salary list is littered with bad salaries for mediocre players who at one point were signed this way, such as DeSagana Diop $5,585,000, Nazr Mohammed $6,049,400, Jerome James $6,200,000, Chris Wilcox $6,750,000, Rasho Nesterovic $8,400,000, Mark Blount $8,513,916, Dan Gadzuric $6,250,195, Jason Collins $6,200,000, Tony Battie $5,746,000, Darko Milicic $7,020,000, and Mikki Moore $5,784,480. All of those were deals no one wishes they had done.

I guess the MaGic can afford since DALLAS send $$ to them during that 4 way trade ??

Yeah, we helped them to clear up some cap space. They then used that to sign Brandon Bass, and now match the offer on Gorat. Nice move guys!!!

Blessing in disguise?

Could of followed in a long line of great white Mavs big men : Uwe Blab , Bill Wennington , Eric Montross , Bill Curry , Cherokee Parks & Greg Dreiling just to name a few

So, what can they do now?

That got me thinkin... If we do that then we still have Damp and J-Ho next summer to play with and we would have a core of Kidd, Dirk, Marion, Odum and whoever else we could tackle.... That is a pretty good group. a lot of forwards though, would that mean that Dirk would play the 5? That's not such a good idea IMO

It is a pipe dream I think, but if we could somehow pull a swingman out of this, that would be great. Therehas to be a way to get a Jason Richardson from PHX? they arent going to be any good this year perhaps they would like some more cap space....

Apparently, they have been debating Richardson for a few weeks now, but, from what I have read, the Mavs brain trust doesn't like him to be smart with the ball.

I don't think signing Ben Wallace or someone similar to play 20 minutes a night is that bad a move in the interim - the real worry is that if Damp hits a certain number of minutes (2,100 I believe) he triggers his option and his here forever. Any spare center who won't get hurt is worth it at this point to keep him off the floor.

UPDATE: After some more reading, I found this on another DB post:

Lots of misinformation and confusion out there about Erick Dampier’s contract and what makes it “super-expiring’’: This year, Damp must play at least 2,100 minutes in the 70 regular-season games in which he plays the most minutes ... so he's got to average 30 minutes a game IN 70 GAMES.

Still need a center, but no longer worried about getting stuck.
