SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, 67, has life-threatening pancreatic cancer, South Korean broadcaster YTN said on Monday, citing information gathered from Chinese and South Korean intelligence sources.

The report raises questions about leadership in Asia's only community dynasty and who will make decisions concerning its nuclear programs.

Kim's health is one of the most closely guarded secrets in the reclusive state but he is widely thought to have suffered a stroke a year ago, although there has never been official confirmation.

YTN said the diagnoses of the cancer came around the same time as the stroke. A gaunt Kim with thinning hair made a rare public appearance last Wednesday at a memorial for his father and state founder Kim Il-sung. The stark figure he cast furthered speculation he was still ill. South Korea's National Intelligence Service could not immediately comment on the report, nor could U.S. officials. South Korean financial markets took the YTN report with caution, saying it cast a shadow over sentiment. "Such news highlights South Korea's geopolitical uncertainty and risks and one thing that investors hate is any uncertainty," said Lee Kyoung-su, a market analyst at Taurus Investment & Securities. North Korea has been raising tension in Asia through missile launches and a nuclear test on May 25 which was met by U.N. sanctions aimed at cutting off it arms trade, one of its few sources of hard cash. South Korean officials said this military grandstanding was aimed at helping Kim build internal support as he prepares for his succession, with his youngest son seen as the likely heir.

I happen to believe that Kim Jon Il's son will be a damn fine dictator and if he's not I'll take my lumps...

Agreed. The kid knows the system better than anyone and is well prepared to run his father's system. He has grown up in the system.

Didn't China offer this kid, but not as dictator. Just Vice Chancellor of Atrocities against Humanity. That's how North Korea got him.

Is that one of your three reasons why North Korea will show dramatic improvement this year?

Maybe GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR THE GEOPOLITICAL POWER STRUCTURE ALONG THE ASIAN RIM!!!!

Does this feel more familiar and enjoyable:

...I'm not going to sit here and scream and bitch and moan... we know where we're all at with this dictatorship

...but, seriously... FIREWORKS AFTER WE LAUNCH A MISSILE IN THE OCEAN!?!?!?!? We shoot a missile in the ocean for our first test launch of the year in the waning minutes of the test phase and we SHOOT OFF FIREWORKS?!?!?

...next, it'll be fireworks time when we murder a South Korean?

I must say, that was the laugh-riot of the night.

Yes, that's much better, thank you.

I am not prepared to guarantee that we will see dramatic improvement. I think that the kid will need a year or two to get used to the speed of international politics, but he has a lot f potential to take this country to the next level and be one of the greatest in their history.

I interviewed the kid before yesterday's cyberterrorism great success launch party event. I was impressed with him as an 18 year old. He seems sharp and has a good leg. I did my best to gush about the Korean Peoples Army and Pyongyang. Glad he signed on, hope he falls in line with a decent tradition of leaders and dictators.

Let's not get too excited here... The kid's only other offers were from Malaysia and Laos... Not exactly in high demand.

Maybe he can develop into a brutal, heartless tyrant, but I'll have to see it to believe it.

Why do we have to tear down this kid before he even takes office. We don't know what he can do yet and he has all the advantages of coming into his father's system. He has a great pedigree and has been groomed for this his whole life. This kid has all the potential in the world. I think he become the heartless tyrant that we all hope he can be.

Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

Proverbs 31:7

Darn you guys; now I'll actually have to read the Bible; latest advice I've gotten on that (from some Mormon, Tongan guys around here): skip over the begats. That done, I'll have to fulfill a promise to my wife before we married (8 years ago) to read the Book of Mormon. And Mormons are very big on begats; not at all big on drinking.
