If we don't resign him we won't even make the playoffs this year. We're dangerously close to that already if we don't make any additions If Kidd goes we have to find another PG because Barea most likely will never be a starting PG.

I think it will be borderline with or without Kidd on making the playoffs. Even with Kidd I can't see the Mavs doing any better than say a 7th seed and a 1st round exit. Mavs need someone like Ariza , but I don't see him leaving LA.

If Kidd goes , maybe NJ would be willing to trade Alston since he has already been rumored in deals since aquired in the VC deal.

Tough situation. A player on the decline for sure, but we don't have anything to replace him with. Maybe we can get in on Rubio somehow. I don't think this team with Kidd is better than a 6-8 seed and being bounced in the 1st round. W/O Kidd no playoffs at all.

Sign and trade. Get something for him. He is on the way down and Dirk ony has a few years left. We are never going to do anything with Kidd that is special so lets try to reload and give the German another shot before he starts on the downside. That is assuming that we can keep him after next season

Having Dirk as the "cornerstone" is the problem, Dirk is not that guy. He's that spectacular number 2 guy.

Really don't hate signing him for 8.3 a year...whoever comes in next will likely need a mentor and I think half of his getting lit up by fast point guards was the giant gaping hole of defense behind him. There's just not a better option right now (maybe Andre Miller could be the guy) - but the anus is on them to find someone to mentor next year or the year after, make good use of the MLE and turn the Stack chip into something good now and the Dampier expiring contract into something else good at the trade deadline.

I have absolutely no faith that it will happen, but signing Kidd won't be the reason they fail. 6 years of poor drafting and a few really crappy personnel decisions will be a much bigger factor.

Good points , but at this point in his career I'd take Bibby & Raymond Felton over Kidd. Do the Mavs really have the time for him to mentor someone ? I mean even if he did they would trade him away and at that point Dirk will probably be on the downslide of his playing ability

Felton I agree with - but from what I've read lately, Charlotte wants to keep him. If we get a salary dump deal for Okafur in the middle, sign Birdman/Varejao/Gortat or even gulp Rasheed with the MLE and then use Stackhouse to upgrade the 2, that's a pretty solid roster - especially if we keep Bass. There's also the rumors Houston lets Artest walk with all of their issues, but I doubt we could land him for the MLE (unless no one takes him). Carlisle does know him well and he probably wouldn't be an issue with the rest of the roster not crazy.

I disagree with you on Bibby - his whole career was made by the old lazy Steve Nash (before we screwed him, he got pissed, started working out in the summer and took his game to another level). I'd take Andre Miller over him in a heart beat. But, we are 1 for 1 on remaking Arizona guards into key players, so maybe we could make him happen.

ONE EDIT: I referenced the same trade chip twice - we either use Stackhouse as the centerpiece of an Okafur deal or we use him to get a 2. l

I disagree. Dirk was a good enough number one when we won the West a few years ago. All he needs is consistent play around him and someone with some attitude that might be able to go to the basket every now and again.

Just becase Dirk is not the vocal leader doesn't mean he isn't a number one. If we were to ever have a different number one guy we would never be able to afford both of them. We could use a more vocal leader of the team of course, but Dirk is easily a top ten talent in the league, if not top five.

whaaaat??? Dirk, MVP of the league, is a number 2? Who's #1? Kobe? LeBron? It's not easy to make all NBA first team.

I think we are done as long as we try to build around Dirk, he is great don't get me wrong, but not that number one guy on a team. He lacks that leadership energy, maybe he will develope it but I dont see happening. Pippen was great, but Jordan made it happen.
