California is the "poster child" of how not to run a government. Run by elected Republicans, yes. Running a government by fiscally irresponsible individuals, regardless of party, is still irresponsibility. If the U.S. government bails out the $25 Billion --or so-- indebtedness that California owes today what are the gurantees that California will reform its tax and spend, spend and more spend policies in lieu of a balanced budget? There are none!!! You and me along with the folk in the other "49" will pay the penalty tax to bail out fiscally irresponsibility. Important thought: If B.Hussain Obama agrees to bailout California what lessons are to be learned by that state's government??? None!!! It only means that fiscal irresponsibility can be alieviated by U.S. taxpayer dollars. What does this mean to the other "49 states?" Well, it does open the door to more fiscal irresponsibility knowing that Uncle Obama has us, the U.S. taxpayer, to bail out more states.

California got itself in their own mess by:

1. Giving away their states social benefits to illegals...........welfare, school, hospitals...etc.

2. Imposing greater taxes on business....to help pay for #1.

3. Imposing greater taxes on individuals....to help pay for #1.

4. Octomom types.

5. Increasing a plethora of social benefits for those California citizens already out of work or on welfare.

Is it irresponsible to give out so much social benefits to so many people where California hospitals have had to shut their doors because of bankruptcy? Two edge sword. The correct answer is within limits and not near enough to have people live comfortably off these benefits and only for a short period of time and not as a life long social income.

Let California get itself out of its own self destructive fiscal behavior. Will some people suffer because of the drastic cutback of social services? yep. California only has it legislatures to blame. Perhaps the people will speak at the ballot box next time.

Very simplistic view about how CA got into this crisis Euless. It's been a long process involving many factors. To blame illegal immigration on this crisis is absurd. Sure it's a contributing factor, but not the overriding one.

And technically it's tougher to pass new taxes in CA than it is for the state of Texas - or the USA for that matter.

Here's a pretty good rundown of how California got in this mess.

I'd say that sums it up quite nicely. It wasn't a tax decrease per se that set this off, it was the idea that the voters can unilaterally decrease taxes and increase services via voter referendum at will. California truly is a government by the people, and the people are wearing tunnel vision blinders and standing in front of a mirror most of the time.

Most of the founding fathers were not very favorable to true democracy.

"[D]emocracy will soon degenerate into an anarchy, such an anarchy that every man will do what is right in his own eyes and no man's life or property or reputation or liberty will be secure, and every one of these will soon mould itself into a system of subordination of all the moral virtues and intellectual abilities, all the powers of wealth, beauty, wit and science, to the wanton pleasures, the capricious will, and the execrable cruelty of one or a very few."

Didn't california cap property tax values a ways back, because skyrocketing real estate prices were pricing homeowners out of their state? If so that is probably a major factor too.

In every article you read, it will mention prop 13. That's what it is. It essentially freezes your property tax at 1% of purchase price. It's had some effect on residential properties, but the major revenue lag has been in commercial properties where people have kept deeds going for 30 years.

--- That is the huge problem.... No one likes property taxes but in an odd way they can help a couple of ways... obviously they create government revenue.... but also someone that purchased property cheap even if it is unoccupied can hold on to it for very little cost for years. Can't really do that in Texas... it costs to own property in Texas so people don't just sit on it and wait for a ridiculous offer. The fact they they are sitting on it causes other property prices to go up rapidly because of less property available. That partially explains why property prices are crazy high in California. Texas only freezes property tax for seniors and then only their homestead and even then only for school taxes which tend to the largest anyway. Some people in California are paying about nothing in taxes on their property because they have owned it so long. I suppose it is true on commercial property too, I just don't know.

---Odd that some GOP keep claiming California is so liberal... they elected the governor and control it. But then again what was conservative about the last administration taxing less and spending more and doubling the debt...(and screwing up the economy) Conservative is what they claim and not what they are. Even their ultimate hero was a labor union president and composed of Hollywood actors, the "Screen Actors Guild", and he was a former governor from the most liberal state in the union and he nearly tripled the national debt when he was President during the 1980's. . Explain that one. The truth and what they claim to be true isn't exactly the same. How in the world can they complain about liberal Hollywood actors when their hero President was one.

---Of course if they went to the Texas property tax system, they would yell tax-increase and abandon the governor just as the supposedly unlta-conservatives abandoned the older Bush when they turned on him and voted Perot..... and we got Clinton instead. The ultra-conservatives should get credit for his election, not the Democrats.

The tax decreases were voter lead initiatives and approved by the voters themselves. The citizens of California cannot lay this at the feet of their elected representatives. The fact that California hasn't had a fire-sale of government social programs yet is perplexing. What's happening in California shows that Direct Democracy does not work. I understand it's en vogue to blame everything on Republicans, but you're really going out on a limb blaming the GOP for California's financial ills, especially when they are the minority party in the state!

There plenty of things California gets its liberal stamp from. California has some of the strictest building codes and car emission standards in the US. Also, have you ever taken a look at the number of judges from California in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals? The court is also based out of San Fransisco, which is one of the most liberal cities in the US. On the federal level, of the 53 House members, only 19 are Republicans and in the Senate, both Senators are Democrats. On the state level, Democrats hold the majority in both houses. Should I even mention the part where it is legal to grow marijuana for "medical purposes?" The state even collects sales tax on the marijuana for "medical purposes."

There is plenty that points to California being a very liberal state.

Just for the record, prop 13 came in under Jerry Brown's watch. That guy makes Pelosi look like a love child of Charleton Heston and Ann Coulter.

Would ya??

Heston is a handsome fella, but nobody's seed could make Coulter's sire worth a damn. Well...maybe Seattle Slew.

C'mon dude, Slew had better taste than her.

But if you want the shaft, you'll have to pry it from his cold, dead fingers.
