Got the other thread going the same time as this one renewed. A shame about Jonas, we may see the kid yet. I don't understand the year contract with Toronto.

I believe thats all he could sign...its similar to Brunnstrum...1 year, restricted the following. With the NHL CBA Dallas and Toronto were both only able to offer similar money...so can't blame Hicks on this one. Yet.

I went back and look at the original Brunnstrom story on TSN and now I'm confused

The 23-year-old Swedish forward signed a two-year entry-level contract on Friday and will be paid in a similar fashion to a top 5 draft pick, which could translate into a cap hit of over $2 million per season.

No mention of an option year or a cap limit -- did everyone just lowball him a bit and tell him to prove himself, therefore he went to the place that would let him play the most?

No...my bad...I think Dallas was the only team that promised him he'd be up with the big club all year.

I heard Gustavsson signed for less than a mil though, so that $2 mil Brunnstrum contract surprises me

I answered that in confusing fashion. I meant did everyone lowball the goalie this summer.

I'm no hockey expert, but what if they just went open net 30 times a year? Turco would get plenty of rest and the Stars would score tons more goals.

Jonas probably just thought he would have more playing time in Toronto, along with their new goalie coach. He probably didnt see past this year that he could be the new number one goalie, the top cop, the commish next season.

Marty Biron or Manny Fernandez wouldnt be bad options. Manny did a good job in Minnesota. Im not sure on the contract status, but Id LOVE to get Mike Smith back if possible.

So far the free agent season has been highllighted by 2 blue-liners and a center. I like 2 of the signings...the other is quite suspect.

I like the signing of D. Jeff Woywitka and C. Warren Peters...both are young with nice upside who should work their way up through the rotation, hopefully for a couple of seasons.

I don't get the almost 3 mil for Karlis Skrastins. He has had at best pedestrian numbers...and he's now the 3rd oldest player under contract. I guess the point is just to have another veteran in with the kids on the defense, but I think this money could've been better spent

I hear you, but it should be noted that Skrastins is only half that number per season. I don't know how many bargain bin d-men are out there, but if you were planning to package another D-Man in a trade - say Daley - that's not a bad insurance move. Also, there are increasing rumblings that Zubov is closing in on a deal elsewhere (but it's in the NY papers, so who knows), so moving quick is not a bad move. If, as the DMN suggested, they build a trade package for Kaberle, Streit, Liles or even Piuneff (sp), they will need to ship an NHL ready d guy back along with a young winger or prospect or two.

Or, Hicks sucks and we just keep our thumbs up our butt.

UPDATE: Just read we have 8 defensemen with one-way contracts if we resign Fistric as expected. That's before Zubov - so 1-2 guys could be on the move in the next few months.

Signed Fistric for 3 years, $1M per and then traded a draft pick to Ottawa for Alex Auld - who is a great choice for a back up goaltender and younger than anyone on the open market (28 years old).

Still plenty of chips to play for a D upgrade or new winger.

Marc Andre Bergeron, Per-Johan Axelsson, Tom Kostopoulos or Manny Malhaltra do anything for ya?

Not free agent route - but the D-men I listed earlier and maybe a team that is up against the cap and needs D (say Chicago or Boston) would want to swing a trade.
