Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Why you don't want to be forced to drive a Clown Car.

Price of repairs to damage done in 6mph and 3mph collisions.

Ford Focus: $691

Subaru Impreza: $1435

Saturn Astra: $1704

Toyota Corolla: $1852

Honda Civic: $2015

Toyota Prius: $2652

Also, the next time you go vehicle shopping you might keep this interesting bit of data concerning smaller cars and the upcoming MY2011 CAFE standards in mind.

According to the NHTSA's report: Corporate Average Fuel Economy for MY 2011 Passenger Cars and Light Trucks, for every reduction in mass of 100 lbs, which includes a .34 inch reduction in wheel track(length) and a 1.01 inch reduction in wheel base(width), that 828 more fatalities can be expected.

If the market is asking for smaller cars then the market will get them. If the market is asking for larger cars then the market will get them as well. That is the point of the american system, we get what the market wants. I only hope that the government doesn't think that they get to dictate what people want.

the government "does" dictate what they "think" is good for us.....

1. afirmative action.

2. civil rights......not only the big one in '64 but all the other ones that followed.....more or less (un)equal rights based upon color/ethnicity/gender/religion.

3. govt. control of our financial institutions and dictating what corporate execs make. that makes sense. if you own it then you get to tell people how much they will make?

4. govt. control of our auto industry. can't wait for those fuel efficient govt designed & manufactured driving machines to comply with all the govt. emission & environmental standards.

5. "its patriotic to pay more taxes" vp, joe biden.

6. mandated health care. one trillion they say? right! try 3, 4, 5 trillion & emulating other countries socialized systems. people already can get "FREE" health care if you don't mind waiting a little bit in some of our free hospitals and clinics....i.e. parkland hospital (dallas) or john peter smith (ft worth). you may not like sitting around with a bunch of people who don't know english & look like they should be locked up (jail, mental/psycho ward or leper colony) but it is FREE care.....even though it is county taxpayer funded.

7. govt control of our schools.

8. hate speech.

well, we could go on but you get the picture. kinda orwelian isn't it? kinda a hodge podge of 1984, animal farm and things to come. equality for all but more for some of us.

Trying bidding a job for a municipality or other government entity as a non-minority owned or not being a historically under utilized business and you will quickly understand.

That's under the affirmative action issue. And really, I'm all for other minorities like me getting hired or companies getting contracted for any state/government work, but if you're not qualified, or if your numbers aren't good, then they're just not. You either don't get the job or you don't get the contract. Competition.

Wrong. I can get jobs bidding as a sub under another construction company that is owned by a hispanic disabled vet because of the "extra points" he receives in the bidding process. I have received two such jobs in this manner, one that required me to hire a sub for some of the work. This requires my sub to provide me with a $$ amount, me to add my percentage and then the contractor to add his percentage. Hey, I'm not complaining, but it sure seems this program is costing the government money.

I'm all for giving everyone a fair chance, but giving extra points for disabled vets and minority groups, whether race or gender, is not really providing a level playing field for all involved.

Just when did the government say it was trying to create a level playing field with all its "social and economic engineering"? I think we left "level playing field" out of the equation some time ago. That just seems to go with the PC world we seem to be living in these days...so be it. Keep smiling and keep being positive...footbasll season is right around the corner and we can get back to the really important stuff we should be diascussing here on GMG.COM.

It's a lot like affirmative action, actually. But AA is still a questionable system at best. It may level the field for some but it also skews it badly for others.

The government contracting system should get an overhaul. Mind you, I work for a business that gets special consideration because it's run by a woman, and is more likely to get contracts. But really, there shouldn't be a need for this to begin with. There shouldn't be a need to up the odds for a woman/veteran/minority owned business due to discrimination. It should just be a discussion of who performs the best work, in timely manner, with the best professionalism.
