During WWII Small banners were hanging visibally in the front window of many, many homes with a star for each family member that was serving. Gold for KIA.

Ironically German POW's were in Denton, well fed and safe, working at the Acme Brick plant.

"On Memorial Day, in between the barbecues, picnics and sporting events, I’d like us to reflect on the sacrifices that have been made and then make a pledge to do everything in our power to prevent more wars rather than come up with new reasons to fight them.

Yes, I understand that some military conflicts will be necessary. I also know that some should never have happened.

We must insist that our political leaders seek diplomatic solutions to our international problems with as much or greater fervor than they rely on military might.

War should always be the last resort, not the first response.

This is how we best memorialize those who have given their lives — by making sure that the sacrifices to be made by current and future servicemen and women will not be based on a whim, a pure arrogant demonstration of force or a blind mistake.

We owe them that commitment, just as we shall forever owe them our thanks."

I have one hanging in my home at this very moment...I have a son and a daughter-in-law serving in the Navy and a nephew serving his THIRD tour to either Iraq or Afghanistan. This time Afghanistan.

God Bless and protect all those who serve and protect.

This was illustrated (and heartbreakingly so) in the movie "Saving Private Ryan".

When WW II broke out, my mother was working for Western Union. She said that the Western Union messenger boy on his bicycle became one of the most dreaded people to see in your neighborhood.
