Wow! Since Joe Barton's degrees are from Texas A&M and Purdue, both BCS members, it's surprising that he would take a stand in favor or the playoff system.

Anything other than a 16 team playoff with each conference champion from Division 1 guaranteed a slot will gravitate back to what we have now. 16 teams still give ability to have at large berths for independents and deserving non-conference champion teams. It is the only way to make a system equivalent to March Madness like all fans want. Don't tell me such a playoff is too much for a college athlete when HS has been doing this for decades.

Then we really need a 32 team system, so that some conferences can have more than one team in the playoff. Conferences which presently have a playoff could use that as part of an overall system; those without would need to realign in order to have a conference championship game. Of the sixteen in the second round, some could be nonchampions or those who for whatever reason are deemed worthy of continued play, plus the occasional independent.

We're not going to convince the BCS to jump into a 32 team playoff. Or even a 16 team. The closest we have to getting them to breaking point is the +1 proposal. If we can get there, then we have our foot in the playoff door and will be a step closer to what is needed.

I think the broadcast media will eventually tell the BCS what to do. Of course, this is just part of my theory about media: it's not about them being liberal or not, it's about what brings them money.

David slaying Goliath in a football playoff system is not going to happen near as often as it does during March Madness. And that is what makes it so exciting, to see a Duke or UNC taken down a George Washington Univ. team. Besides, the big schools (ie OU or Ohio St.) will argue that is not cost effective for them to go and play a Ball St or Buffalo in a first round game in say St. Louis, then maybe step a notch at another neutral site to play another upstart. They will argue that their fans will not follow, as they do for one bowl game, plus the cost of travel for not only the team but the bands as well. If we get a playoff system, you can bet TV revenue will be the driving force, and it will drive the small programs ( like ours, the MAC, maybe Conf USA) right out of the picture, unfortunately. There may be a "wild card" for say a Utah, Boise St., or a TCU, but that's about it. That's not how I nor any fan wants it, but unfortunately, the $$$ will determine how this plays out. Obama will not be able to fix this one.
