High percentage of hispanics in FWISD, all to it.... Think about it, its not to hard to figure out.

How does this factor? I was not aware that the Hispanic students in FW constantly travel to Mexico where they might contract the disease. Ethnicity has nothing to do with this situation. Its not like people who are Hispanic are more or less likely to contract the disease. They are not walking around as carriers that are just waiting to give the flu to Whitey. This is a pretty ignorant statement.

Relax. You know as well as I that Mexican-Americans are far more likely than white, blacks, Asians, or Eskimos to have relatives visiting from Mexico. The only U.S. death was a girl taken from Mexico into the U.S. because they thought she's get better treatment.

Is there a media overreaction? Yes. Is it racist to point out the disease outbreak started in Mexico and was first seen in California and Texas among the Mexican-American population? Of course not.

I don't think that it's fair to say that because they are Hispanic means that they automatically visit or have family in Mexico. Some Hispanics are from Venezuela or Puerto Rico, or may even have been born here and have never even stepped foot in Mexico. So, basically, what you are saying is that anywhere there is a large population of Hispanics should be given a wide berth? There have been less than 100 cases reported in the US. That is ~0.0000333% of the US population. I am not ready to declare one ethnic group more likely to have a disease based on that sample size.

I would also say that the more affluent people in the US are more likely to have recently vacationed in Mexico. Does that mean we should shut down the Highland Park and Southlake school districts?

By no means was I trying to be racist with my comments and was not meant to be taken that way. BUT this was probably the reasoning that FWISD to have to make such a bold decision to close down all schools. This on the other hand is racist and pretty igonrant if you ask me.

Renaming swine flu, mexican flu is pretty insensitive and quite stupid.

On the surface maybe, but the 1918 pandemic was called "Spanish Flu" because that's where most of the early fatalities were really reported, since many countries were keeping mum because of WWI(didn't want to let the other side know they might be in a weakened state)

(However the Spanish Flu actually originated in the USA)

Here in SE Texas, the Navasota ISD closed yesterday through May 11, a couple of Cy-Fair campuses have closed and a couple of Houston ISD campuses have closed, all through May 11th I believe.

Considering that the regular flu season spans months, what are we going to do if this drags out for more than a couple weeks?

I don't see our government being able to control people behaviors for more than a month before people get "cabin fever" from staying at home with summer fast approaching.

San Antonio I.S.D. using common sense.

As the pork industry takes another hit today I'm just curious about what happens when on May 12th, another student in where ever I.S.D. comes down sick with the flu. Then what? Do we all curl up in the fetal position and avoid going outside our homes for a set length of time?

Rick

Apparently. You now have Egypt killing pigs en masse despite no cases being reported there. People are also strolling around public with dust masks on. This is rather sad.

Why would a Muslim country be raising pigs in the first place?

About 10% of Egyptians are Coptic (similar to "Orthodox") Christians. One thing I've noticed as an identifying characteristic of Christians from Arab countries is that they drink alcohol. Euless, where I live, has numerous immigrant groups (this can be a blessing when it's time for Greek Food Fest). Many of the various immigrant groups have their own churches; one of which, I've noticed, is Coptic.
