Next it will be the NCAA and Pro sports that are balking at bringing players and events to Texas due to closeness to Mexico. I expect the Texas Legislature to suspend meeting any day now too....think delay for Stadium vote/issue. Panic, panic, and the media loves it!

Seems pretty lame at this point...big over reaction. Your BIG GOVERNMENT nanny state at work. You know of course, that local representatives are not capable of making proper decisions...we must have central governmental bodies do it for us. Way to go comrade!

This swine flu may turn into a real problem, but it doesn't seem to warrant this type of "panic" at this point. You think it's a ploy to cut back on travel and budget expenses?????? Hmmmmmmm...conspirancy at work here perhaps...nope, just your government over reaching yet again into the realm of local decision making!

Good grief!

How Not To Get Swine Flu:

1. Don't sneeze on people.

2. Don't cough on people.

3. Don't wipe boogers on surfaces. Use a Kleenex.

4. Throw used Kleenex away.

5. Wash your hands after you doo-doo or pee-pee.

6. Stay away from sick people.

Makes you wonder what this state will do if we had like 1% of the state that had this....Gordon put this whole thing in perspective this morning: So far, one death and you would think we all have it, yet all of last year, there were 13,000 people who died of the regular flu in the US and virtually no panic.

For those conspiracy theorist out there, the congressional vote to nationalize health care is a mere week away... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Do find it humorous that congress will spend less time reading this bill than the time spent by the state legislature analyzing the athetic fee.

WTH? The news just announced that Fort Worth ISD has shut down the entire school system. There must really be a ton of kids sick for that to happen.... or the admins are wanting an early summer break.

I believe the news said tonight there are FOUR (4) confirmed cases in the ENTIRE FWISD school system, yet they are shutting down the entire district for a week. Unreal.

Yeah, but I bet that stupid assed writing final at 8AM which consists of nothing more than signing my name on a piece of paper will still go through!

There are a couple of reasons why this is the response that public health officials are recommending for what seems to be a small number of cases.

First - this particular strain appears to spread very easily, which means one case quickly becomes hundreds of cases if you have large numbers of people in close proximity to one another.

Second - this strain is likely to cause a more serious disease than the normal seasonal flu strains.

The last major pandemic of flu of this strain type (H1N1) was in 1918-1919. 500,000 people in the U.S. alone died due to that pandemic. The goal of these measures is to prevent the flu strain from having the chance to spread to large numbers of people, thus containing the outbreak.

It's the freakin flu!!! I'll bet you 500 don't die, much less 500,000. I'm going to Mexico over Memorial weekend. Gonna eat a ton of bacon and lie on the beach. The dumbest crap I've ever heard.

You know, I don't know anyone that contracted SARS. Wasn't that supposed to kill us all?

That's the great thing about these kinds of public health efforts. If they succeed, very few people get sick and then everyone complains that it was overkill. If they don't do this, then lots of people could get sick and all we would hear is complaints about how the government didn't do enough to prevent it.

I prefer scenario #1.

Well I am no expert, so what do I know, but I will guess that our medicine is miles ahead of where it was 90 years ago. Why don't we just shut down the whole country for the next couple of weeks - or close the borders for a couple of weeks to make sure no more cases come into the US? I hope this thing gets contained, and if this is what needs to happen, then so be it, it just seems a little overkill to me at this point.

An average of 36,000 people die each year from some sort of flu, yet regardless of the warnings countless still refuse to get a flu shot.

Swine Flu nothing new.

I never get a flu shot, and haven't had the flu since I was a kid, and I have to ride packed elevators most days at work. I don't think I have anti-flu serom in my DNA. I kind of view the whole flu shot thing as a scam to get in your and your employer's pockets.

I prefer to get sick, feel like crap for a few day, let my body fight the iillness and get over it, then return to work a healthier person. People wouldn't be sick all the time if they wouldn't run to the dr for every sniffle and headache and let their immune system take care of illnesses.
