The "sky is falling" folks were with us then, are with us now (even in the White House...see carbon emmissions caps mania) and will be with us in the future. Just heard another "nut" talking about how overpopulation will soon doom the world because we cannot grow enough food on the planet...ugh! I tend to think these folks do it for two reasons:

1) It's their moment of fame, and

2) They make money off it!

Too bad so many folks actually listen to this garbage. SUMG, thanks for reminding us just how wacky these predictions are and how very wrong, for the most part, they always are....

“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.”

One of the key figures in the founding of the enviromental philosophy study at UNT...great person, great teacher and a great UNT supporter.

Earth day elicited change in the general habits of most, smart, conscientious people...I'd say these suppositions are based on current trends pre-1970. Prove he's wrong.

Well, I would be comfortable in stating that the year 2000 did not usher in a world famine, with the exception of Western Europe, North America and Australia.

Prove it wouldn't have happened without Earth Day.

“By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’”

Pfft. This guy got it so wrong. I drive up to the pump and say, "Fill 'er up, buddy," and he'll say, "that is not my job. Pay before pumping please! Be sure to see my selection of taquitos. Thank you, come again!"

I'm willing to bet the industrialization of China, who is not real fond of "green" projects, produced far more fluorocarbons than the less than 1% of the world population that began to recycle reduced.

Yes, I'm aware there were other reductions, but you get my point.

I remember being taught in 8th grade science class that the next ice age was a mere 20 years away. Guess that was wrong. And people wonder why the enviromental movement is dismissed by most critically thinking people.

People got to think they have control over they're surroundings. You know, we are the ones causing the climate change, therefore we can control it. It increases self-worth, both as individually and as a species.

My favorite:

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.
