The New Southwest Conference

Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns

North Texas

Houston

Rice

Tulsa

Southern Mississippi

UTEP

Tulane

UTSA

SMU and Boise State to MWC

after BYU AND Utah to PAC 10

Memphis and East Carolina to Big East

Works for me. North Texas still my favorite road trip.

UTAH has a pretty nice athletic program these days. They would actually be an ok fit in the PAC-10.

Some of the alumni that I have talked to about donating have essentially said...only if we can get in a conference where I know some of the teams. How much easier would it be to get donations if conference games wee SMU, Houston, Rice, or Tulsa?

If we have to rely on stipulations in regards to "who we play" before certain alumni choose to support us, then those alumni are probably lost and should not be counted on for anything. They would end up placing the same stipulations for support in certain games and were we to lose them we would be back to where we started from with them.

I'd say that's a fair statement, yet several of those have attended North Texas games in the past and a couple have given at a decent level. But you're right, it's mostly just an excuse to get out of donating.

I do know that there is also some validity to using the "who we play" crutch. Otherwise, why would some of the schools, especially those in Texas and those with more national reputations, outdraw our conference mates?

i know fans that will only come to fouts if it is a well known opponent. sbc teams are not. media frowns upon our lame conference.

Two facts to support the theory that conference affiliation matters.

1) I'd never heard of a single Sunbelt team outside of UNT's brief stint in the big west until I enrolled in school here.

2) Our honors stats class was talking about the whole tier 1 university thing yesterday, and one girl (this is one of our smart students, mind you) kept saying that UNT needed a football team. Are there really students who are unaware that we have a team or was she, at the ripe old age of 19, already so jaded as to make sarcastic remarks that our football team is the same as not having one?

yes. bad football in a bad conference at north texas is takne by many students to be the same as no football. thus they stay drunk in the parking lot or in apartments on game day.

Why do you think I joined the MGC? So I could stay drunk in the stadium. This team hasn't been worth watching in 3 out of the last 4 years. (2007 sucked but at least it was exciting at times, ie. Navy.)

I'm glad you found 2007 exciting --total butt whippings I watched administered at OU,ARK, and Troy didn't do much for me. Only at Rice in 2007 topped those for total annialation.

If the SBC is sooooo bad as some students think why don't they go on the road and see how far behind our conference mates our poorly funded athletic dept. really is? Why should they think that we are so much more of a hot item? Maybe they just need an excuse to stay drunk and bitch about fees and tuition while they are spending more on booze in a semester than either fees or tuition cost them. I also would add to old guy student that if the girl in his honors stat class is unaware that UNT has a FB team she must have her head deeply inserted in her rear and if she's one of the brighter students it certainly does not say a great deal for those below her.

24K plus for our last home game with New Mexico St. Why? Conference championship riding in the balance.

Winning cures a lot of things.

Bingo! The first sell out EVER at Fouts was when we were 1-AA and playing SFA (1989). Three things were going on.

1.Both teams were nationally ranked.

2. There was a conference title at stake.

3. We had an outstanding promotions guy working in the athletic department......who was/is a North Texas alum.

Oh, and I'll add #4. The year before (1988), we had beaten some D-1 schools that got the attention of the general public. In other words, we had won some games that amounted to something.

Did I mention that we were 1-AA at the time.
