I'd say naval escorts, but until the military contracting system gets totally cleaned up, it'll probably be handed off to PMCs. Not a bad option as long as it involves hiring an actually legit agency who can actually do their work and prevent attacks by avoiding them altogether as well as being prepared for attacks they can't evade. Officially, there really should be a US naval action and I think it needs to involve blowing these people out of the water once a threat has been determined. The Somali government isn't strong enough to do it on it's own, so I don't think they should have much say in what happens to their less-than-savory elements.

Give a closing ship a warning at a certain distance from a civilian vessel. If they keep approaching, turn that ship into a coral reef and let it do something productive for once. You can try to negotiate, but it's better to never have hostages in the first place.

The pirates dont seem to have recieved the message, which is no supirse. People like that have to be dealt with in a quick and decisive manner. Any sign of hesitation or weakness and they will jump on it. Unfortunately, since the ships travel over international waters, there is more than likely rules against arming the civilians onboard the non military vessels, and the same goes for hiring private military contractors, since they are civilians. Thank you United Nations. These pirates are probably using small boats to board the vessels, so you dont need a large warship to escort. All you need is something the size of a Coast Guard Cutter. Have it in tow behind the vessel and if the pirates come, cut it losse and let them engage the effers.

I don't know the law exactly but I have been on yachts that had a small arms cache on board, and I was told that many boats do. I understood that it was perfectly legal in international waters. I think you can even have the big stuff in international waters. But how it is dealt with from port to port I have no idea, but I was under the impression that most ports had a procedure for the small weapons cache.

I read this morning a French vessel has captured 11 pirates. I think we're going to see a crackdown on this pretty soon.

Slightly off-topic, but I was really excited to see this morning that Columbia's top drug-lord, Daniel Mario, has been captured.
