Wooing Recruits Online Verboten

Recommended Posts

So would this mean our occasional posts encouraging specific recruits to come to UNT could get the university in trouble?

More than 700 people signed up for the [Facebook]group encouraging Wall -- a local standout and the nation's No. 1 basketball recruit -- to pick the Wolfpack by national signing day next week.

But the NCAA says such sites, and dozens more like them wooing Wall and other top recruits, violate its rules. More than just cheerleading boards, the NCAA says the sites are an attempt to influence the college choice of a recruit.

I don't know how in the world the NCAA could track all of these types of things. It may apply to message boards, but there are so many message boards out there, I am just not sure how they could have the man power to do it.

I think it would be ridiculous for the NCAA to enforce the rules in that way. It would be one think if people were going to his personal facebook page and contacting him to convince him to go a school. To say that people can't post something stating what they would like a recruit to go to their school because they might see that is over the top.

Assinine stance by the NCAA. Maybe...if they e-mainled a recruit and asked him to watch it they might have a valid argument. However, if the NCAA gives sanctions wrongly (for something that the university had absolutely no control over) then I think that the NCAA should be sued.

Completely agree. The NCAA is an organization that punishes the people who try to follow the rules, and reward those who blatantly break them.
