True Center Or True Point?

If you're JJ and you could only get one or the other, which do you think would be best for this program? Try to keep in mind that JJ does seem to do a more than respectable job running these guys without a true big man. I think as big as Wooden was, he was not that tall? I can't recall for sure.

Imagine receiving interest in that 6'11" 250lb beast man. Athletic, good footwork and timing.

Or, that Jason-Kidd mold that can push the floor and make this offense really hum with George and Eric on the floor simultaneously, and White where he's best @ the 2.

Just having some fun.

Give me a dominant Center.

Since UNT has been in the Sun Belt, the only Centers I would describe as truly dominant were Yemi Nicholson of Denver and Shawnston Johnson. Wooden without injuries and health problems might have been dominant. Michael Southall of Louisiana would get an honorable mention.

Outside of Johnson has NT ever had a scary Center? I only saw Willy Davis maybe twice. He was about 6-8, but that was monster size back then.

Anyone remember when WKU had Josh Higgins and Nigel Dixon?

WKU also had a monster seven footer about five years ago whose name escapes me, but he looked like a lock for the NBA if it weren't for health problems. Maybe we'll get lucky and our 6'8" 275 smu transfer will turn out to be something special down low next season. Our Whitehouse freshman to be next year could possibly develop into a D1 center, but I guess at the moment he looks to be more of a power forward type who possesses a lot of small forward skills as well. Really looking forward to seeing him on the court. Could develop into an NT all-time great with his size and athleticism.

Is there really anything such as a true Center anymore in basketball? I bet you could only name a handful in the NBA and in college, they have become an endangered species. I think what this team needs most is a rangy 6 '6" or 6 '7" 3 guard that can slash and defend and rebound. It would also be nice to have a pure shooter like McCoy, we are going to miss his spark off the bench.

Given that JJ tends to have athletic teams that like to run I would prefer a pure point guard. A great PG makes the game easier for all the players on the team and even if you don't have a great post the PG can get the ball to your posts in good positions to score. How many easy dunks did WKU have against us last night because of great passing to posts underneath the basket?

Our JC transfer coming in (John Shorter) kind of fits the bill as a 6'5" slasher, rebounder, and defender, but I think he's a little weak from beyond the arc. We definitely could use someone to replace McCoy, Dennis, and possibly Mangrum from three point land. Sure would be nice to get a three point specialist in a big point guard package. Not exactly easy to find.

Yeah, the easy dunks along with the FT's that came with them are what killed us. Still can't believe the FT differential.

Looking at the make-up of this team next season I have to believe that a point guard would be most beneficial. If Cameron Spencer is as advertised...a defensive minded lane clogger and solid rebounder then I believe you have your starting 5...even if he only plays 15-20 minutes a game...that would give George some time at the 4, his natural position, and give Eric a bigger body on the floor, which will help him considerably on the block. Work in Kedrick, in a slightly expanded role...Holman giving a Stew-like contribution...hopefully a bit of depth from Knox...and even Shorter in a small line-up and I think this team has plenty up front. Would I take Josh Heytvelt? Of course...but I just don't think it makes this team considerably better.

A point guard would really help this team. When we start to go into a stretch of taking bad perimeter shots (first 8 minutes of the second half vs. WKU), a true point guard would settle things down and say "no more jumpers, we're going inside."

A true, offensive minded, low post scoring, 6'11" or 7' center would make going inside much easier. Not to mention opening up other players when the double and triple teams come. I'll take the true center with a low post game every time. The reality is these are few and very far in between, so we will probably have to settle for a true point guard.

I was going to put settle in quotes, but feared the quotation police.
