I lived in Denton while in school and understand about the "cool" image but I have a lot of friends that have been in Denton a few times and refer to it as "dirty and grungy".

And, just what part of Denton do your friends "visit"...FRY STREET? To call Denton "dirty and grungy" is just plain ignorant and shows a lack of any real knowledge about the city. Sorry, your "frinds" are simply wrong. Too bad they "missed out" on 99% of Denton.

I guess I'm ignorant too because I think most of Denton could use a good scrubbing.

GreenMachine...what makes you say so? Is this just another thread going nowhere? You tend to find what you are looking for in life...that includes how you look at places where you live. In my experience I have never found a place where I was living that I could not enjoy, and find the plusses to enjoy. And, I have lived in some large and small places...Denton, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Stillwater, Norman, Warrensburg (Missouri), Knob Noster (Missouri - you can't get much smaller than that), Lompoc (California), etc.

Probably, every place in the world could "use a little scrubbing" especially if that's what you are looking for. Is Denton the prettiest place in the country, no...does it have it's issues with maintenance?, yep...but, all in all I have found it to be a great place to live and raise a family. Anyway, I do find that students tend to have a very different view of the city where their school is located than do people who have also lived in those cities for some time.

People do tend to look at things from their own personal prespective...for good or bad, that's just the way it is...SO, whatever you wnat to say about denton, it is home to the GREAT MEAN GREEN NATION...so, call it what you want...just come and spend money and buy season tickets!

Kram, I believe you are reading way too much into my comment and maybe taking it a bit personal. I enjoyed Denton when I lived there, I enjoy going back from time to time. I've lived in Austin, Frisco, Philadelphia PA, and London, England and you are right, each town has its plusses and minuses.

I have given up trying to convince local businesses to support the Mean Green. I just assume nobody does, then I am pleasantly surprised when I go to a new restaurant and see a flag or jersey hanging on the wall.

Flyer,

Many, many businesses have tried to support the Mean Green, and it is not reciprocated. You can tell the years they tried by the color of the jersey, the logo, design, etc. because it is not updated. Yes, the student venues do, but other businesses have really tried. I know one business who did not cater the BB games anymore because it was not cost effective. I.E. they did it to get new business, did it very cheap cost to profit wise, and it simply did not create any new business for them. The same people attend the games and the same people go to the Mean Green room. Rudy's tried to align with us, Tx Roadhouse, El Guapo's, Frenchy, the list goes on and on. Frenchy used to put all kinds of things about UNT on his trucks, which a lot of people see every day, but was told to buy a parking permit to park his orange truck at the game. Now, TWU gets all the recognition there. i see UNT's point, but hey, anybody coming into Denton sees those vans. Unfortunately, also, UNT game days do not have much of an impact on the local economy as games at other college towns. So it seems we have some deposits to make back into the community before looking for withdrawals. That said, you would think at least Cool Beans would have the games.

I agree Denton is lacking in college town "appearance". I know it's hard to compare to Stillwater, Fayetteville, Norman, et al, but something is missing in Denton. Perhaps it is because of the "other" college in town and businesses don't want to slight TWU? Perhaps the conference or opponents do make a huge difference? But I'd bet Boise, Fresno and even Hattiesburg, Mississippi lets you know who the favorite college team is by the way the businesses dress up. Maybe the new stadium will help the town wake up and take pride in supporting the home team?

NT 80, even in Hattiesburg (i know from having relatives who have lived there all their lives and a few work at USM), southern miss plays second fiddle to Ole Miss and Miss. St.
